Well I have a working clock now. I yanked 3 spare bulbs from the junkyard (1 was good) and an extra clock in decent shape with a good bulb. 4 bucks and now my clock lights up and I have a spare clock as well!

Yep, but at least I figured out you don't have to rip out the dash to get the clock out. I have a factory shop manual that looks like it's been through **** and is in 2 pieces but has some good info. If you stick a safety pin in the hole at the bottom of the clock on the Gen 1's, you can pry the spring down and take a small flathead screwdriver and gently pry the clock from the dash housing. I had 4 or 5 ripped out at the junkyard within minutes.

I will try to remember to get this for you when I get home. If I don't post back in a day or so, just PM me and remind me. I THINK that # is on the clock itself because I called Ford with a part #, and they didn't have it.

The 90 clock has a printed circuit board on the back side of the clock and the bulb is contained in a little 1/4 turn plug in adaptor. On each side of the hole in the printed circuit board is the electrical path, and the little adapter bridges that hole and completes the circuit. There is no wire running to the bulb and that is why some people think there is no bulb that can be replaced.
I have been trying to get my clock to light up for years and someone gave me a cure, but I did not have the nerve to try it.
You find a small bulb with wire filaments that come out the back. You solder one lead to one side of the PCB hole and the other lead to the other side..... forget about the little 1/4 turn gizmo.

I'm pretty sure it takes the soft button EATC bulb. The bulb I'm talking about is the taller one in the picture. Just comparing the 2 bulbs, it looks like both bulbs may work in the clock.

My 2 cents worth...
I tried one of the hardbutton lamps out in a 92 clock I had laying around and everything fit correctly, good electrical connection. The hardbutton lamp is just shorter than the softbutton/clock lamp. In my opinion, the shorter lamp will do the trick nicely. Guess I need to rig up a power supply to that clock and give it a test drive!

Finally am back in the shop with time to play around and, yes the shorter hardbutton lamps will work fine in the 92 clock. I have a couple pics on my phone comparing them. Will post if anyone is interested...

The bulbs that I took out of a 94 EATC were the exact same as the bulbs in my 92 clock.

A 1994 soft button unit. I had a couple others kicking around, but I got rid of them, so I am unsure about the bulbs in those.

Already discussed earlier in this thread. Posts 14 and 21 confirm the bulb is the same as one from a softbutton unit.
FWIW the lamp base is technically called a neo-wedge base. this helps when searching for replacement lamps.

I got some bulbs from Mike (neo wedge base) from an older hardbutton unit and it fit right in my 89 clock and it works great.
I am so excited that I even keep it updated to the current time. It is so much nicer than that blank screen.
