Well, when I start my car now, it squeals on startup, about 70% of the time. Especially, when the car is cold (been sitting for a few hours). Right after i start it and if I turn on the defrost or a/c or heat, I get the squealing definitely for the first few minutes of startup. I shut of the heat for a minute and turn it back on and it doesn't. Is it a loose belt? Which one if it is? Also, it sometimes has an intermittant quick, light squeal. Can a pulley be rubbing? Can you lubricate a pulley?

yeah, it would be in your best interest to replace the belt. although sometimes the squeaking can be cause by the tensioner. in the interim you can go and buy a spray to spray on the belts to quiet down a little. i know STP makes one that they sell at autozone, im sure there are dozens of different ones though.

While we're talking about pulleys... can you sand an idler pulley?? In the process of rebuilding an 89 SHO for a friend as a daily driver and it's accumulated a bit of rust on the alternator idler pulley. (been sitting for 2 years according to the seller). So I was wondering if sanding some of the rust of the idler pulley would be ok?
