Creeking from ****

Ok, well, i've had this annoying creek for a while now. I pulled my front tire off the car on the passenger side and looked around at stuff. Tried moving the tire around. it moved side to side alittle bit. So to the noise, when i turn the wheel is when its bad. Its sounds like a worn mattress spring. Someone mentioned the sway barr end link, im not to sure. The ball joints, control arms and bushings are all less than 10k old. ALSO my strut is poping when i go over *** holes or small bumps in the road. Any ideas? THANKS

Strut mount bearing?

It only has to be rough to make the spring creek like a banshee. Try taking some weight off the front of the car and turning the wheel...if it goes away, I'd bet it's the strut mount bearing.

Mine does this when it's cold. I take it's kinda cold in Nebraska.

If you have greasable fittings, you might wanna top them off. Are the tie rod ends new as well? Mine have creaked on me before.

If the strut pops (or clunks) when you go over sharp bumps, that typically means the strut mount is bad. If you replace that with the Monroe part, you get a new bearing as part of the deal, so that's where I would start.

OH YES. in the last week our high where i am was like 24 and the low was like -4.....

I cant remember if there are any fittings. ill look when i decide to get functioning for the day. I believe the tie rods are new.. ill double check my records.

When does it creak? Only when you turn the wheel?

Kinda sounds like my noise. Gets worse when its cold out, when turning the wheel from side to side constant creeking. In my case its nothing to worry about, its because I dont have the spacer plates on top of my strut mounts.

lifted it up in the air.. every pump from the jack it was creeking. I turned the tires and there was no creeking with the turns..its gotten really bad. I can push on the car and it will do it in both directions (upand down). the sound sounds like its coming from the knuckle....

this sounds like a classic ball joint or tie rod problem.... they can do that when you turn wheels... its usually ball joints making this noise, however I do rarely see outer tie rods causing this noise. If you said you had play shaking the tire back and forth on the sides with it up in the air, track out where that movement is comming from... if its playing at the knuckle your Outer tie rod has seen better days.... might even be the cause of the noise

now at the end of this thread you say you turned the tires and no creeking with turns... was this with the wheels already off the ground? At the begining of this thread you said it was worse when turning........

find the tie rod/rack problem and fix that... then see if you still have the noise... you can really check balljoints by putting the cars weight on the suspension with the tires off the ground......... jacking it up by the suspension...

then take a big pry bar and wedge it uner the tire and pry on it... if you see movement from the balljoint area, like the knuckle part moves but the control arm doesn't... your balljoints have some play in them and need replacing


even if its 10k miles, I think one guy on here, Hamal, has constant ball joint problems with new one... I forget his username but someone might chime in

if those check out good, I'd say go for a strut mount/strut bearing, and maybe even new struts all at the same time........

its worse when turning when on the suspension. but in the air nothing.. and i couldn't get any play from the ball joint today. i tried. tie rods are not new. im leaning towards tir rods. i was planning on doing suspension in the spring unless i get a new toy...

if you got play from the outer tie rods, replace them and see if that cures the noise.. if it didn't atleast your steering will be better...... and get an alignment

it is rare but outer tie rods can make this type of noise.... it is usually ball joints though. Please be aware it is extremely hard for me to try to point you in the right direction without hearing the actual noise its making......

It sounds like your front strut mounts. I had the same noise a few years ago and I replaced them and it went away. I actually have to do it again because the noise is back. If you can try to, get Ford strut mounts. I think I used NAPA last time and they only lasted about 50,000 miles.

if it happens when you turn the steering wheel, i would say its the upper strut bushing, that makes most of the creeks and squeaks on high mileage cars. Im about to change all the suspension bushings on mine.

In my experience, if it creaks when the suspension moves up and down, its most likely the rubber bushing on the inboard end of the lower arm. My 95 is like that on the rear at the moment, fortunately, I can't hear it in the car w/ the stereo on ....

Jack up- the car with the wheel on until it is off the ground; grab the top of the tire and pull while you grab the bottom and push, and vice versa and see if there is play. If it is tight, tie rods are good; might be endlink ?

I replaced my LCAs, axle (torn boot), and tie rods over the weekend, and all the popping, creeking, etc went away.

I vote for the tie rod ends. The OEM parts are notorious squeakers, but can be saved by injecting grease through the rubber boot.
