Well I have confirmed that I have Crank Cancer ugh. Well it looks like the sprocket is toast. The crank shaft looks fine, just a little dirty. I read the links in my previous post here,"]http://www.shoforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=006484]here, but it did not say where to get the parts? Here are my questions.

1. What size key stock?

2. How do you keep it in? (weld?)

3. Where do you get a new 3.2L sprocket? (anybody have a free or low cost one they want to get rid of :D )

Thanks for your help!

Sprockets can still be gotten from Ford, or at least on a locator service, IIRC; Keys are D/C'd but are still around on the locator. Dampener may also be toast.

Crankshaft ultimately needs replacing to repair it correctly.

I did this & it worked up until deciding to part the 89 Winter Beater out this weekend (held the crank cancer at bay):

Fill gap w/ JB Weld
Loctite the crank sprocket on the shaft
weld timing belt retainer disc to crank sprocket
weld dampener to retainer disc
sock crank bolt on, weld in place.

This helped keep the stresses even throughout the entire assembly, rather than in the weakened crank area. However, this approach precludes the use of timing belt covers, so your CPS will be exposed to the elements.

Best of luck.

Although the pics are hard to see what you're talking about, just because the crank is slightly rusty doesn't mean you have crank cancer. Is the actual keyway on the crank elongated? If not, then just put a new key and new timing gear on and you should be fine. Just make sure you torque the bolt properly to avoid the problem the next time.

Is there any other options besides Fred's Weld theory (I really wish I had a mig welder, but alas no.) The crank looks fine, I just need to insert a new key and get a new Timming sprocket. The Balancer keyway looks good. (see pic) I also took a closer pic of the cam to see how the keyway has been enlarged.

Still need answers to my questions.

What size is the key?

Anybody have a spare sprocket?

I will be calling Ford dealerships tomorrow to try to locate a sprocket and key, I know it is going to cost an arm and a leg. frown

With the sprocket looking like that, the crank CAN'T be fine (99.99999% certain of this) - it'd have the exact same wear gouged into it (EDIT: In fact, your photo of the crank shows the wear on it, and will allow movement of the key (rapid bending back & forth in the keyway worn area near the front main seal; also, this will likely cause the key to break in half).

If you don't find a new one with a dealer locator service, try partsvoice.com, or alfitz.com. I don't know the key measurements off-hand, but I do have a used sprocket, and I do have new keys in stock. You are right, however - it'll cost you an arm & a leg for me to dip into my stash.

well, concerning the KEY, I got one from Al Fitz and I did everything short of taking a baseball bat to it... I could NOT manage to get it to seat in the keyway on the crank! I don't know WHY, all I know is I spent a lot of time fooloing with it... I eventually ended up straightening my old/bent one and using it.
