ok, so im having a ford tech rebuild my 95 SHO motor and hes had the car almost a year now. he got the motor back together with a crank that was turned and oversized bearings were put in. since doing this he is saying hes not happy with the crank bearing clearances. im starting to get quite aggrevated and would love nothing more than to drive my car since its been almost 5 years since i last got to enjoy it. what i am looking for are any suggestions or any leads on getting normal standard crank bearings. any help is greatly appreciated, thanks guys

There are no regular crank bearings available. I would recommend pulling a junkyard motor and using it.

Why was the crank turned?

Tell him to go find an unmolested crank, confirm that the tolerances are in spec, use standard sized rod bearings and good used main bearings (the main bearings are discontinued across the board), and put it back together.

Sorry to hijack a thread. Anyone ever follow up with clevite again on the bearings? How about Egge Machine, or Kanter autoparts. They make hard to get engine parts for the restoration crowd.

I am with SHOtimer on this one. I recently spun a bearing and have been doing all sorts of homework on Crankshafts. Either Rockauto, O'reillys or Autozone. I believe O'reillys cost is around $250. Thats for the kit by Crankshaft Rebuilders so they will have to order it and if you can get the crank back from your mechanic you can waive the core costs by-by. Granted these cranks are 20-20. I think its going to be a little harder to find a standard crank without paying through the nose.

i just ordered and recieved undersized crank main bearings from cleavlite. I can try to find the part numbers tonight. 10thous / 25mm undersize

i also have a set of GOOD regular main bearings if thats what you would like. PM with a price.

When you turn the crank down you need oversized bearings not under. Off the top of my head clevite CP1435P .25 , MS1435P .25 are 1 size over and readily available.

I would do as stated above. Either find a new crank from the JY or what not and reuse the mains as they are not a high wear item and rebuild it that way.

If you can get it to the SHOp up here we can take care of it.

Crankshaft journals bear the brunt of your engine's horsepower assault and are subject to all sorts of damage and wear. Journal scoring or scratching as a result of oil contamination is common. To restore the journals to stock smoothness, machinists remove just enough material from the journal surface to eliminate the deepest scratches. Undersized bearings compensate for the amount of material removed during this machining process.

when you machine a crankshaft, you make the journal smaller, and you need UNDERSIZE bearings.
oversized bearings are for a journal that is TOO BIG, and you need a smaller bearing - thus oversized bearings.

Props for manning up and acknowledging your mistakes.

I still think you should change your name though. :)

Late post I spoke with clevite before and they said for them to make a order of sho bearings they would need a order of 2000 pieces minimum. So roughly 167 complete seats. It would be nice to see what total cost would be and do a group buy!

Talked to a Mahle Clevite administrator and this is what he said;

"We've discussed the issue many times with SHO Owners. The tooling is gone, so new tooling would run $50k plus. Next is a minimum run of 1000 pieces. We discontinued them some years ago because of poor sales. The sales prospect has only worsened since then. It's not a prospect we'd do unless someone was buying the entire run. There are still a few sets being soled out there. Just talked to a guy at PRI last week who'd sold two sets for $300 each. That's a pretty good price!"
