headbang Is it possible for the cam position sensor to be bad and not have a problem with the tach? I have changed out the front head because the number six cylinder was reading low. Now the compression is all in the 185 to 195 range. I have new plugs, wires, seals, and belts from recent 60k. I have swapped out the coil pack, dis module, fuel pressure regulator and injectors with other known working parts. I also replaced the barely used crank sensor with another new one, checked the gap on the sensor, verified the timing at tdc several times, the plug wire routing is correct, and all of the grounds are good. My car is going from bad to worse. Now it starts hard and won't stay running on it's own and always backfires. The cam sensor won't be in until monday or I would have already tried that. Am I missing something? headbang (where has this one been?)

Unplug the cam sensor. Once the engine succeeds in starting (several attempt), the engine will run without it.

Then you can see...

the cam sensor will give you a hard start and will cause backfiring. but after it starts(unless its totally fried) it will stay running. double check the firing order and try unhooking the cid. good luck

The cam sensor is round and has a plug on top. It is located above the power steering pump. Ok, if you unplug the sensor and nothing changes then that means the sensor is bad right?

Well did the car eventually start without the CMP? When you unplug it, you are basically making the computer guess at the correct timing and it make take several times for it to start. Usually the CMP won't make the car stall out on it's own. If you unplugged it and it still won't stay running on it's own, most likely the sensor is ok. Still could be bad. Like the others said, double check your spark plug wiring, the coil pack has a way of misleading you sometimes :D Goodluck

Okay, I switched out the cam sensor and it now runs a lot better. There was rust on the old sensor. Unfortunately, the engine still shakes and it is still missing- mostly at idle. It doesn't backfire anymore thank goodness and it is definitely more driveable, although you can feel it missing. I am absolutely positive that the wires are routed correctly and the timing is right. The wires go 123465. Any thoughts on what to check next?
