Is it REALLY necesary to replace this thing on the 60k? I mean if it still works and no coolant or anything has gotten onto it, can I just leave it alone? It would save alot of labor if I didn't have to replace it. Does the sensor go bad from age or what?

While you have everything apart on that side of the engine, it is a good idea to replace it.

I say, from a few years of experience, that replacing it every other timing belt change on the MTX (120,000 miles) and every change on the ATX (100,000 miles) is sufficient preventative maintenenace. You really don't want to have to pay for all the labor just to replace the CPS.

From what I've heard the sensor just doesn't go bad, 10 times outta 10 it's b/c the waterpump has leaked onto it. If I don't replace the sensor I figure it would save at least 2 to 3 hrs. labor if not more. Plus I won't have to mess with the cam sprockets. I read the whole procedure for the ATX and looks like I'll have a fun time!

You DO NOT have to remove the cam sprockets to get the wiring behind the rear cover. The worst you have to do is remove the water pump and for most front end engine services that is already part of the plan.
