Has anyone fitted a spray nozzle externally to the intercooler to bring it's temp down, similar to what some of the STi's used to have from the factory a few years back?

Have you even FOUND the intercooler? I haven't had my MKS Ecoboost on a lift yet but the intercooler is being evasive.

I'm looking to plumb a line from the windshield washer to a nozzle aimed right on the intercooler air fins.

I don't think the Ecoboost engines have intercoolers because the direct injection of the gasoline cools the charge air just fine. You're going to have to look elsewhere if you want to go fast and furious.

I would run something that would that would cover the whole intercooler with a fine mist for best results. In addition to a button activation, I would put it on a boost pressure switch so that when you hit xx boost, it will trigger automatically. Install a large water bottle.

Thanks! I was looking around trying to find something smaller. yamahaSHO I think you are right - this will take a multi nozzle setup. It's hard to argue with thermodynamics - the latent heat of vaporization provides a huge amount of cooling, and cooling the intake charge provides power, especially on boosted cars.

Yeah, the intercooler is there, but hidden well. Some folks even use a nitrous style circular device that shoots a mist in front of the intercooler also for the same effect. I know some of the big rigs use this set up. A neat idea with nitrous, and it won't effect the internals of the motor...I hope.

Not much intake air flowing from there I don't think. Is the intake inlet at a high pressure zone between the engine bay and quarter panel like it is in the Gen III? I don't think it gets much air from in front of the raidiator and none from behind. Much of the actual effect of NOS is thermodynamic anyway rather just adding oxydizer to the intake charge, so spraying far outside of the intake then sucking it in would have much less effect than a wet or dry system internal to the intake path.

I like the NOS and alcohol systems, but washer fluid is so much easier to come by. For testing I'm thinking of just disconnecting the windshield sprayers and re-plumb to the intercooler, then watch the data logger for air temp.

The downside to nitrous for an intercooler sprayer is it isn't nearly as cost effective as $.50/gallon distiller water.

you can use CO2 or get a small garden chemical sprayer fill it with ice cubes and water and spray it from there

really theres not enough heat soak to make things terrible

the STI needs it because the the intercooler is mounted above the engine... it was really noticeable in hot stop and go traffic when i had my WRX

cant he do a sort of charge cooling like you have on your SHO Jason? Like, in partnership to the intercooler?

I did find out that the intercooler is in fact part of that whole package known as the Bolster-Integrated-Assembly which also houses the radiator, trans cooler and oil cooler. The intercooler is an air-to-air type. The plenum for the intercooler is on the very bottom of the BIA. The Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hose goes down from the throttle body to the top of the BIA.

I bet it was drastic with the WRX. That intercooler is uber-tiny.

Yes, but there is really no need to. He's got an intercooler. He'd be better off just keeping that cool.
