Looking at the thermostat housing, there is a small sensor below and left, and a larger one below and right with a connector. Which is the dash gauge sensor?

The one with a single wire going to it is the dansh cooling sender.

Thanks, guys, looks like I got the dreaded temp sensor failure. The gauge is wandering all over the place; I was on the road in the desert when it started (94deg.) The temp went up and up; I pulled off and checked things out but the engine didn't seem overly hot. The fan was cycling normally, so I figured I'd keep going. Bad place to be stuck........
