While my 97 seems to be running fine, earlier tonite it kicked on the SES light followed shortly by the blinking O/D light of death, pulled the codes and this is what they were

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1) - maybe o2 related?? This is the third time it's displayed this code.

P0175 System too Rich (Bank 2) - ??? First time on this one.

P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor Intermittent/Erratic/High - I'm guessing this is the one that flared up the O/D light?? First time on this one also.

The only real difference I could tell when I got it home is an abnormal idle, not the steady calm idle she usually has, fast then slow, in a quick repetition.

I attempted research on older posts, and am left somewhat more confused than before I read them. Thanks for any insight, and assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

:thankyou:

With the lean and rich codes and abnormal idle I would try to clean the MAF but it is possible that you have a bad O2 sensor too.

Thank you for your input, do you think that could be causing all three codes??

No i don't, I believe the MAF might be only one of your problems and you might not even have a bad MAF. Sometimes the abnormal idle is caused by the MAF sensor going bad or your car could be misfiring. Sometimes a misfire code doesn't show up right away unless the coil is completely dead.

Once again, thank you jmpSHO, I wondered about a dying coil myself, since only two have been replaced, talked to a Ford mechanic today he told me to try burning the non-ethanol gas, said that would most likely take care of the intake codes, but that I should replace the VSS or it will keep throwing codes/lights, he made it sound rather simple, anybody replaced one before?? Or have any other contrasting opinions?? Just jump right in, don't be shy.

:munch: :thankyou:
