Hi All,
I have been chasing a problem with my 89 for almost a year now. I have had an ongoing problem with getting a code 19. I have replaced the crank and cam sensors, new plugs and wires, and just recently a dis and coil pack. Before every time I drove the car It set a code 19, I mean every time I drove the car. Today after changing the dis and coil I went out and ran it hard, and got a code 49 and 91. The code 19 was gone.
But code 49 is something about the spout defaulting to 10 degrees of timing btdc. What does this mean and does it have anything to do with the code 19 cid circuit? I have been wanting to enjoy this car, but it's been down more than driven in the last year.
I know the code 91 is a o2 sensor thing, but both o2 are new as well. Any thoughts?

Check to make sure that your spout connector is still present in the wiring. It is located behind the passenger side strut tower. It's in the wiring near the cam sensor. It is a little 2 pin plug that is either black or gray. This needs to be plugged in , or you will get your 10 degrees of timing and no performance.

It's there, and connected. The code didn't set right away, but after having been driven a while.I would think if it was unplugged it would set right away. I have been having this problem with the dis and timing circuit for ever it seems like. Everything is new, and all the wiring has been checked.

Any other ideas? my patience is almost done with this car, and next step will be parting it out and using the money to get a different car or stuff for one of my Daytona's. So if you've got an idea now is the time to let me know. Sorry if I seem like a dick, but I'm just really done with dealing with this.

was talking to someone over the weekend who thought it could be a issue of it picking up some electrical noise from the stereo system, and will throw that out there for everyone. Car was originally the premium sound, but I swapped in a jbl from a 90 sable, the wiring harness from the deck back, speakers and amps, but it's all wired and grounded and works fine. It's not some aftermarket system.

Both 02's were replaced at the same time this code 19 thing started. When I bought the car last summer, it ran perfect for about 2 months. I believe it had been stored for a while. Then the check engine light started coming on, and when i pulled the codes I got 19, 30something and 91. The 30 something was about egr and hasn't come back since.

I replaced both 02's and still got both 19 and 91. My mechanic checked fuel pressure and determined the fuel pressure regulator to be bad, pump works fine, and replaced the fuel pressure regulator. No more 91, but 19 set every single time the car is driven.

Had car checked out by shop recommended by a member here, and they fixed one spot in the wiring that had been damged on the back side of the engine, replaced cam and crank sensors and ran tons of diagnostics, and found no problems. But the light still always comes on. Usually durning rpm changes, like shifting or lifting off throttle. Tried swapping computer, no change same fault. Sent it to an auto electric shop they recommended, nothing wrong could be found, told me it was some quirk and he couldn't find anything wrong.

I drove it this way for a month and then it started it run really bad, dropping cylinders etc. New plugs and wires curred that, but same code 19.

Finally spent the $ and got a new dis and coil pack, despite being told both were ok by previous shops. The first time driving the car recently after new dis and coil pack I get light, check codes, 49 and 91....but no 19. I look up the code, something about the spout and defaulting to 10 degrees timing, and the lean condition in front bank I think. Haven't touched the car since.

Car runs great, strong, and feels quicker than my 95. But the damn check engine light is always coming on with cid circuit faults. I should think the 02's would last longer than this too. Could be a fluke it ran lean. Occasionally it would stumble for a few seconds like it was looking for timing when it was cold outside, but the weather is warm and haven't noticed that for a while.

Any ideas? now it violently stumbles and misses while driving, so not too driveable. I have a harness I bought from another member, but haven't had a chance to swap it out.

I would think if everything is checking out ok you might have a bad PCM.

That's what was wrong with my 94 when it has a mysterious miss in the engine.

I would say try getting a different spout connector and put that in maybe the one in there is screwed up somehow. Clean the terminals and such off best you can maybe it's just a bad connection.

I would ignore the light if things are running good.

As for the stumbling and miss, what kind of plug wires are you using? I always had a problem with aftermarket, especially the lifetime warranty wires at the autostores. I went back to Motorcraft and the problems went away.

Also, what test are you performing with the codes provided? KOEO or KOER? Are you doing the old paperclip test?

By the way, if you dropped the oxygen sensor at any time before it was installed, you could've damaged the sensor. If you bought one with a lifetime warranty from the autostore, I would just take it in for a swap and tell them you have the code showing it's bad.

I have a spare computer I got out of another 89, same logic code...still does it. I can look into the spout connector. The plugs and wires were from RCM, and I'm pretty sure the wires were motorcraft.
