Code scanner tips?

I just picked up a code scanner on the cheap from a buddy of mine...I was just wondering what recommendations would you have to pulling codes from the ABS system and EEC IV? I think I might be counting them incorrectly when pullin em....

Did the scanner come with directions? If not, search the web for the manufacturer and see if they will e-mail you instructions, or have them posted "on-line".

If you have to count flashes you did not need the scanner. You could do that with a paper clip and the cars system!
