dude! i found this awesome code reader. It was in a magazine once. It's actually sold at a lot of stores. It has revolutionized technology. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I better go to the kitchen and get it out of the drawer. It's called a paper clip. :D Best code reader. www.shotimes.com This will show you how to use it. thumbs_u

Those cheap ones aren't any better than the paperclip and reading the flashes on the dash. The ones that display the actual number are too expensive to bother with. Use the search function to find the links for the procedure. You can practice now before anything goes wrong. How fun!

half-way there, I think.
Damn - that's harsh. Seriously though - he's right. I've got one of those little readers - not at all what I expected - it's easier to count the CEL as it blinks the code off.

I picked up an Actron unit on eBay for $10 and have been very happy with it. I prefer to hear the codes beeped out so I can multitask while the codes are being spit out. Plus, as I found while working on my Dad's Taurus last week, the paperclip method doesn't work when the CEL bulb is out!

Truely there are really good diagnostic code readers out there. Actron makes them too I think. Then you have to buy the Ford eec iv specific software. It's a couple hundred but I haven't seen any extra features and the paperclip will get you the same info. The expensive ones can probably use software to diagnose other mfg. codes but still not cost effective unless you work on many different types of cars to make $$$.
