21 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor out of range

24 - Intake Air Temperature (IAT) or Vane Air Temperature (VAT) sensor out of range

29 - Vehicle Speed Sensor problem

85 - 2.3L T/C Automatic - 3/4-4/3 Shift solenoid CANP solenoid (ALL 1989) 1.9L MFI - System has corrected rich condition

The 21 and 24 codes were likely due to a cold engine during the test. The code 14 is the big one that indicates your crankshaft position sensor is faulting and could leave the engine stalled until it resets. You can get this part as the following: Wells SU242 or the Borg-Warner CSS54.

The code 29 says that the vehicle speed sensor on the speedometer cable on the top of the transaxle (follow the speedo cable down to the transaxle and look for the electrical sensor where the upper cable plugs into the lower cable). This sensor is needed for idle speed control to be elevated above about 1,400 rpm while the car is rolling and also the cruise control to work properly.

The code 85 says that the canister purge solenoid valve is not cycling properly. This solenoid valve is located in the vacuum line that attaches to the top front of the throttle body and travels down below the coil pack. You will find the C-cell battery sized servo below the coil pack. You can replace this valve with the Borg-Warner CP502 to properly vent the gasoline fumes from the charcoal purge canister to the intake manifold.

The code 14 is the most critical error, with the code 29 also able to cause driveability problems. The code 85 can be taken care of when convenient but may be more important if you are smelling strong gasoline fumes in the engine compartment.

Good luck in the cold zone.

it was only a koeo test, i didn`t dare to crank it up.. i can`t or have never smelled any gas smell in the engine compartement.. can it be caused by me changing the valve cover gasket?

the speed code is a big lol .. the local ford fixed my speedo and 57 miles later it died, and it was my fault they said.. they had done what i asked for and no reason to complaine..

what can happen if i drive the car with a bad cps?? i have some backfireing sometimes, but only when the engine is cold or low speed high, gear with much throttle..

and the most important question.. can i fix this with my ten thumbs?? :)

If the CPS fails the engine will stop as if you turned off the ignition key. No signal form the CPS - no spark. The CPS can be accessed by removing the wheel, fender splash shield, crankshaft damper (damper puller) and timing belt covers. There are two stainless steel Phillips headed screws the secure the CPS above and forward of the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Please try searching on some of these terms as there have been discussions regarding the easiest ways to replace this sensor. I can do it in the dark, by flashlight, in 2.5 hours. Your ten thumbs may take a little longer, but are most likely capable.

The CANP solenoid valve won't prevent the car from running or running well.

The speedometer may only need the cable plugged back into the lower cable tower. Just give it a look. It is just like a bicycle's speedometer cable with square sectioned ends on the internal core. There shouls be a small clip holding the bottom end of the cable into the top of the 8" tall tower coming up from the transaxle. You can see and access this from above.

Crankshaft position sensor is around $40-45 U.S.

Like Scott said, a failing CPS can leave you stranded somewhere if it fails completely. No signal will trigger the plugs to fire. Check for oil in the plug wells, fouled or out of spec. sparkplugs and wires for misfires too.
The goose test is hitting the throttle at the appropriate time during the test. I would take note of what you have in memory and clear the codes. See which, if any, return.

about the canister purge solenoid. can i have disconnected the sensor while i was changing the gaskets? or any tubings?
