Code 25 and 85

Ok, so this weekend after I did my 60k I ran my codes to see if anything else was messed up. It came back with a 25 (knock sensor not detected in KOER test) and a code 85 (purge canister).

Two quick questions.
1. What would a bad knock sensor cause the car to do? Could this be the source of my power loss?

2. Where is the purge canister, what does it do, and is this thing the reason I smell gas going up a hill?

I read on SHO shops web sight that the knock sensor rarely goes bad, but that is what the computer said.

Any help at all would be very helpful.

If the engine doesn't knock during the KOER test then you'll get a code 25. In other words, code 25 doesn't always mean the knock sensor is bad.

The purge canister is the big round cylinder in the lower front driver's side corner of the car. You'll see a hose going from the throttle body down to the purge canister control solenoid valve and then a hose going from that valve to the canister. The canister is charcoal filled and it stores fumes from the gas tank. During certain times the computer signals the valve to open which lets the fumes get sucked through the throttle body. There's a diagnosic procedure for the whole thing but I don't feel like looking it up for you. Maybe a search will come up with something or a good samaritan will post the testing procedure.

The 85 code indicates that the EEC cannot detect that the solenoid valve is opening. Replace this $20 part to correct the code. I used the Borg-Warner CP502 from O'Reilly for $20.99. There are several equivalents available from other auto parts stores. Also expect to find that the vacuum tubing has deteriorated to the point of possibly cracking and leaking. A few dollars of bulk vacuum hose will solve this condition.

Where is the solenoid located?

Yeah, almost every hose and tube is showing extreme signs of age. I just replaced most of the coolant lines running from the thermo housing, and the cruise control vacuum line turned to dust when I removed it.
