Hi guys, My 90 just died on me on the highway. It was running fine then started to buck and carry on. I had to pull of the road. I coded the car and a code 14 came up. I think its the crank sensor, but not sure. Been away from these cars for a couple of years, forgot some things.:help:

I forget, what is the ignition profile pickup. I thought that was the crank sensor.

It is. Area91 was just pulling that from a generic code listing.

Your symptoms are of an erratic crank (PIP - Profile Ignition Pickup) signal.

Could be due to a CPS failure or some other fault that directly affects the generation or handling of PIP.

As an example, I have a 95 MTX in my garage that was exhibit erratic PIP signals. When I pulled the crank bolt yesterday morning, I found that 1) the bolt was loose and 2) that the balancer and the timing gear had both walked outward on the crank so that the vanes on the timing gear were intermittently not passing through the CPS properly. Replaced the CPS, reseated the timing gear and balancer, and re-torqued to specs. Car fired right up and runs perfectly so far.

What to look for: When the crank bolt is removed (this one was NOT tight), observe the difference between the snout of the crankshaft and how much "gap" is between the face of the crankshaft and of the balancer. This one exhibited a 6mm gap when I took it apart. When it was all put together, the gap was less than 2 mm. The gears on this one were about 4mm outward from the correct position. According to the owner, it had been at least 30K miles since the last front end 60K (as reported by the PO).

I'm new to SHO's but it sounds like the CPS to me, I just had the exact same problem myself, ran perfect until it got warmed up then it would just die, cool it down and it would start right back up. never checked any error codes (tried but when it was running there werent any, and when my buddy with the code reader showed up it ran with no problems for two hours and when he left...IT DIED AGAIN! SHO=:laugh_ti: ) I replaced the cps anyway and its been fine ever since.
