The clutch IS self adjusting in the SHO.......that is what you do by lifting the pedal up and pushihg down slowly rather than haveing to get in the enigine compartment and adjust it...

When the clutch starts grabbing very high, the clutch is getting towards it`s end.Heavy pedal feel and high clutch engagement are signs of a worn clutch.

If there is any take-up left in the cable, you should hear a click or two when you lift the clutch pedal up. You may have to pull harder than you had pulled previously.

If it's a Centerforce clutch, then for some god-awful reason, it's SUPPOSED to engage high. Something about auto-crossing or some nonesense.

Had clutch replaced at 60k miles -- worked great for several weeks/several thousand miles. Now grinding when shifting from N to reverse and sometimes from N to 1st; can often "feel" gears when shifting. Dealer says self-adjuster is fine and grinding condition is normal. Also getting "whoomping" sound when shifting at high RPM. Dealer says "whoomping" is due to safety switch on clutch. Comments?

I also feel the gears sometimes when I shift, especially in 1-2 and 4-3 shifts, although I believe this to be my bad synchros. My clutch releases fairly high, and is only about 4000 miles old. It is an OEM replacement from NAPA.

My clutch enguages on the last 1/4" or less.I think people are usually grabbing at straws hoping the clutch cable can be tightened by pulling up on the pedal. It doesn`t adjust the clutch(a clutch isn`t adjustable),it adjusts for a stretched cable. As was said,a high enguagemant usually means the clutch is at it`s life`s end.

Fwiw,on the autocross comment. Some clutches are adjusted to have a very high engagement. The idea is that the pedal doesn`t have to by pressed completely to the floor, making for a quicker shift.

A WHAT????? Whoomping because of a safety switch????? Kindly post that dealer's name here, the rest of us want to stay clear of them. The only safety switch on the clutch is a starter interlock. Prevents you from starting the car while in gear and engaged, and going thru the back of the garage.

Just looked at the original post date, this things been around for a while!

hmmm....are you sure about that switch preventing start while the gear is engaged? When my clutch was out I could not put the car in 1st what so ever so I turned the car off and put it in 1st then fired it up and gassed the pedal and I was gone. So therefor I guess I don't have that switch.

to prevent grinding when going into reverse always shift to 1st just prior..

it just takes half a sec...clutch in put in first...move to reverse..no grind.
