My car is always grinding going into 1st, second, 3rd sometimes, and when I shift into any gear, I have to match the speed with the rpm's first. I just float the gears whenever possible and avoid the clutch. so at first I'm think my synchro's are f'd up, but I'm wondering if maybe the clutch is just shot? it does NOT slip. maybe the release bearing??? :bonk: :bonk:

You might have broken a strap whcih will do this. Though you might have screwed up your tranny anyways.

Push your clutch pedal to the floor and hold it there for about 10 seconds to be on the safe side, then shift into first. Is there still grinding? If so, it's a clutch issue or a clutch cable needing adjustment.

Bad Tranny?

I just bought my SHO a few months ago. Not even a week after having it, I just had to SHO the car off to everyone... :nono: I loaded the car up with 5 people, and reved to redline through every gear just about for several miles on some country roads. We got back to the bar, and all you could smell was an embarassing FOUL SMELLING clutch. My sister nearly got sick on the spot and got out rather quickly. At first, I though for sure that the clutch was done for. Yet, it still engaged. The only problem was with second gear. I could not get into second without grinding the gears unless I was doing a certain mph (10-15), and you could forget about downshifting.

AeroSS, does this seem like what your tranny is doing?

I haven't had the time to take out the tranny and take a look. But I believe that the syncros are SHOT. Anyone else ever have the same problem?

Synchro's do not become shot within one second. When you have a grinding issue, not relating to the clutch, it is more than likely a bad blocking ring. The blocking ring is to slow/stop the gear you are wanting to engage, then the synchronizer locks it in place.

Most times when there is a grindage issue, you have a bad clutch, bad clutch cable/adjustment, or a bad blocking ring. If you keep grinding the gear(s), you will eat at the synchronizer, needing new ones if you want for a smooth shift. And if you fix your grinding problem, being the clutch or blocking ring, but not the synchro, you will have a notchy shift in that gear from there after. Another thing to cause notchy shifts would be the teeth on the actual gear, where the synchronizer engages with. When booth are worn down, a new blocking ring will not ensure a slick smooth shift, but only a grindless one.

If your grinding problem popped up out of nowhere, and you never had the symptoms of a bad blocking ring going out, like hard/notchy shifts and slight grinds on cold shifts, it's likely to be your clutch.....especially if you are smelling burnt clutch material.
