this is my first cable cluched car. i've only ever dealt with hydrolic, so i'm going to need some help on this one. the car runs and drives awesome... but the trans will grind going into third and fourth. all the other gears are fine. is this a simple adjustment on the cable, or is this something i should actually be concerned with?

I've seen streched cables , worn out quadrants and TOB passing through the PP , I really hope for you it's not the last one I mentionned.

I bet your fluid is low. Check that. Then if it still grinds, you might need to change your syncros...read: rebuild.

It's most likely not your cable adjustment or clutch issue. If it was, you'd more likely have a problem with ALL the gears.

For some reason, it seems 3rd and 4th gears grind during engagement with low fluid level on these cars (and many others). If ignored or too far progressed, you will be rebuilding.

sounds like a good starting point. thanks. i'm assuming that there is just a fill and a drain plug on the trans housing like on a t-5... is that correct?

Just a levels plug. Fill it until a steady pour of fluid comes from the hole. If there is a real drain plug present, the trans has been modified to accept it.
