Made some progress today. I now understand the need to have plastic caps for the ball joint boots. headbang Chances are they were already nicked before. The rubber seems rather sad anyway. It rubs right off on my fingers.

The front driver's side subframe bolt looked just fine. The front passenger side bolt was corroded a few inches on the shank, but not the bottom protion of the threads. The rears had the recall performed on them not that long ago. UPS is late, but a new recall kit is on the way. Just how hard is it to replace the front nuts?

To remove the subframe, I placed a jack under the front and jack stands in the rear. The rear was stubborn and didn't want to drop much. I took my time and lowered the front and back a little at a time until...CRASH! The subframe was now separated and on the floor. The power steering rack studs were still sticking through the holes in the subframe. Do you think I damaged the power steering unit when the subframe fell? It was hanging by its hoses and no fluid is yet to be seen leaking. Also there is a rubber hose much like the radiator reservoir *** tube hanging straight down and terminating near the horn. Did something break off of the end of it? What is it?

Tomorrow the tranny gets dropped...well not literally I hope. Any words of advice before I get to it?

As far as replacing the subframe nuts, the passenger side front nut wasn't too bad.. It sounds like you're doing alright and your nut holding tabs haven't failed due to corrosion. That's a plus :) I was thinking about just replacing the driver side nut, but it was a LOT harder to gain access to, and it turned alright, so I decided to leave it for now. I have the spare nut just in case.

As far as dropping the tranny... you might have to adjust the nuts on the engine support (you built Scott's support, correct?) to angle the engine/tranny to where the tranny will come off of the engine with enough clearance to get out of the car. Just be careful, as it is one heavy awkward hunk of metal to fall on you!!!! If you are doing this solo, make sure to use a jack under it.

Finally, if you are reassembling the car at the same time, MAKE SURE TO USE LOCTITE on the pressure plate bolts. You do NOT want to have to rip the thing apart again. boink I'm sure you know this already

Good luck to you, and if you encounter any other problems, my memory is still fresh from the recent clutch job on the '94. Gonna need it for the '95 soon enough headbang

Thanks for the response. I take it the rack should be okay. What about the rubber tube?

That rubber tube is supposed to be there. I have no idea what it is, but I wondered the same thing. And the steering rack should be fine. I don't think we had any trouble, though we used two jacks to lower the subframe. It finally fell when I got the bad bolt to sheer off.

I am wondering now if that bolt piece with nut is causing my ghost clunk... how to get it out of there is another question!
