My '89 SHO (157k and running fine!) needs
a new release bearing, so replacing disc and pressure plate makes sense. However, the estimate for parts and labor is about (or a bit more than) the market value of the car. So, the question is: What have forum members been paying for this work? I have an estimate from a very reputable tranny specialist (local, not a chain operation) of about $850. Including parts and labor, that is. How does this stack up with others' experience?
What else might "typically" be replaced
while the transaxle is out? I still like driving this car, the seats, sunroof, other features etc.,so am thinking to go ahead with it. A real dilemma! Thanks in advance for any advice and insight. Bill

$850 seems a little high.

You can pick up a near stock replacement clutch from South Bend or Midwest SHO for under $300. The Labor to R&R transmission, turn flywheel, and change transmission fluid is typically around $3-400.

Check around a bit. I did mine myself, saved a bundle, and I know the work was done right.

$850.00 is high, but you can't necessarily blame the shop. It's my job to know where to get the cheapest parts for this car, but it's there job to work on hundreds of cars and specialize in nothing. If you're not careful, it's easy to find a $400.00 "stock" clutch kit.

$450.00 for labor I would consider to be a very fair price.

I don't think the shop is too far off.

Im doing my own clutch right now (waiting for parts currently)

Working entirely by myself, I was able to disasseble everything and get to the clutch in 5 hours or so.

Im figuring reassembly will be a bit quicker, as I wont have to fight with stubborn bolts, ball joints, etc.

I just have to figure out how to get that subframe reinstalled by myself :D

I like your analysis of the market value! With the current cost of gasoline, sometimes I think a full tank of gas exceeds market value! :(

I recently assisted with the clutch replacement on my 89. While in there, the original blocking rings were replaced in the tranny. Additionally, I installed MOOG bushings on the front strut rods and SHONuts poly front sway bar bushings. It's a good time to check the condition of motor mounts and subframe bushings as well. What brand of parts does this shop include in the price quote? Any chance they will allow you to provide the parts?
