I had the hood up on my 91 MTX today and I could hear a rattle coming from the clutch. I got in the car and when i pushed the clutch in the rattle stopped but when I would release the clutch the rattle would start again. I also noticed that when a gear is engaged the rattle gets louder until about 2500 rpm then it sounds like it stops. I don't know if it really stops or i just can't hear the noise over the road noise. I have recently replaced the clutch and the the tb. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Try the clutch cable adjustment by pulling up on the clutch pedal with about 10 [edit: oops] pounds of force. The pressure plate fingers need to be in firm contact with the throwout bearing. Obviously they are in good contact when in gear, so this may not be the situation. If adjusting the cable doesn't change the sound, it may be a worn bearing in the transaxle. Does the "rattle" spin down like a slowing shaft when the clutch is depressed or does it stop immediately?

Pulling up on the clutch pedal did not work. When I push in the clutch the noise seems to stop right away. There is no spinning sound.

half-way there, I think.
How many miles on the clutch?? Sounds like mine after the TB dug into to the fingers. The fingers get all bent up and the TB rattles against it. When depressed the TB is forced again the fingers and evens out. That my quess.

the pedal makes a kind of buzzing sound towards the top of the release when it is in gear. It does not buzz when I release the pedal when I am not in gear.

shopower, take your car back to the shop. They did not torque the pressure plate properly, or use loctite. You will see a very premature failure of the clutch. When I messed up on mine, I took out 5 PP fingers, and destroyed my throw out bearing.

This is a relatively common problem. I've tried several recommendations to quiet mine down, but it still comes and goes. A guy in our local club actually replaced the clutch quadrant on the back of the clutch pedal. He said it cured the noise, and cost him only $10.00! Apparently it's the same as a Mustang.

As far as shopower's rattle, I'd concur with everyone else that it's the TOB rattling. I would definitely take it back to the shop since it's been installed less than a week to have them take a look at it. However, every 5-speed Omni I've driven has this noise. Luckily it doesn't seem to affect anything on those cars.
