My clutch began chattering about a month ago, and just recently the engagement moved up almost at the end of the pedal release, where as before, it would engage normally a few inches from the floor board.
I have a SPEC level II with a Fidanza flywheel.
I had been adjusting the take-up regularly by pulling up on the clutch pedal, but I never heard any clicking when doing so. Perhaps the automatic adjustment never worked properly
I have about 30,000 miles on the clutch, but I have never abused it, so I feel that it should still have plenty of miles left.
This week I tried to adjust it again, but the engagement has not moved, it is still at the end of the pedal travel, and the clutch feels like it would slip if I revved the engine hard.
After messing with the quadrant, by manually pushing against it with a screwdriver, the clutch cable lost all its tension, and I was able to pull the cable off at the transmission end. It has about 1” of loose play.
I can still drive the car around the corner and shift gears, but I do not want to take it out on the road.
I believe that the quadrant is not working properly. I found a small spring, about 1” long on the floor mat, so it may have come from the quadrant.
How exactly does the self adjustment work? As the clutch wears, one needs to release the cable so it allows the thinner, worn clutch to come closer to the flywheel. Is this correct?
So now my loose clutch cable should allow the clutch to come into full contact with the flywheel, and should have trouble disengaging the clutch rather than engaging at the end of the pedal travel. Again, is this correct?
Any ideas what is going on here?
I hope that I do not have to pull the clutch, I just changed the transmission on my Bronco last week.
