Clutch problems!!!

My clutch pedal has to be pushed all the way to the floor (1/2" from firewall) to disengage. Once floored, 1/4 to 1/2 inch movement and it's engaged. When at a complete stop w/ pedal floored, putting it into first takes a bit of effort. Rolling to a stop, not so bad. Actually, shifting into (and out of) the first two or three gears while driving can be a bear.

Not sure how old the clutch is, but it seems to grab very well. I've tried adjusting it to no avail.

How have you tied to adjust it? The standard method is to lift the clutch pedal with about 10 pounds of force. If for some reason the take up spring in the clutch pedal mechanism has failed, you may have to manually pull the cable end above the blue colored toothed quadrant toward the rear of the car while holding the pedal up to disengage the ratchet mechanism. It may be that the throwout bearing and pressure plate fingers have worn so much that the clutch can only be barely disengaged. This would require new parts to repair.
