So...

I let my cousin try and learn how to drive a stick in my SHO. Probably why i have this problem.

A couple days after her attempt, i was taking my SHO for a joy ride. I left a stop sign getting after it. The shift from first to second was clean and quick. I dont recall any noise once i was in second, but as soon i was trying to go from second to third my clutch was noneffective. Shifting out of second took considerably more force than usual, and then it would not go into third...

Parked, i can shift through all gears fine. When i try and start the car in first gear with the clutch pedal pushed i feel the car lurch with the starter. Also the clutch pedal feels like normal.(my clutch quadrant has acted up before, and the feel is VERY different from that, so its not the quadrant) When the pedal is pressed the clutch fork arm is actuated looking at it through the engine bay.

My question is... I dont have time to take it apart right now, but when i do... what problems might i be facing? My guess is the throw out bearing. What do you all think??

If it's the clutch, you'll see the pressure plate fingers have been worn through by a seized TOB. If you don't see that, then start shopping around for a trans.

If adjusting the clutch cable does not work, you need a new clutch.

How do we adjust the cable in our sho's.
I'm new to the forum and sho's and I'm having this exact problem but a little worse.
Also my tob is way to loud.
I'm having trouble finding a good write up on clutch replacement.

Lift up on the clutch pedal. If there is slack in the cable, it will automatically be adjusted out by the quadrant mechanism on the pedal. You will hear one or more clicks if it does adjust itself.

I agree. The worn pressure plate fingers can also be caused by riding the clutch habit.

The function of the automatic adjuster is to compensate for the normal wear of the clutch disc. Unfortunately, that is not the way most of our SHO clutches fail. So, lifting up the pedal won't help you.

However, I have had temporary success performing the opposite adjustment. (tightening of the cable by pushing on the quadrant) This requires laying on your back under the dash. This will enable you to shift gears IF your clutch fingers are not past the point of functionality.

Your solution is a new release bearing and pressure plate. Be prepared to spend about 1000 bucks. Mostly labor.

Of all the busted clutches I've swapped out in these cars, I've only seen 1 that failed because the disk simply got too thin. All the others were TOB/PP Finger problems.

As for what clutch to get: Any stock replacement kit from rockauto.com or your local autoparts house which includes the disk, pressure plate, TOB, and repair sleeve will work just fine.

As milage goes up, the snout on the trans where the TOB rides gets galled and worn since it's just aluminum.

Most of the clutch kits come with a sleeve that goes over the beat up snout and a new TOB that fits the sleeve.

the new TOB and sleeve were a recall - in late 1990, IIRC.

I was replying to the original poster regarding clutch labor rate.

As far as clutch brand. Exactly what TwistedMonkey and 93rev3sev said....
