I have an '89 SHO and my clutch is SHOT. All I need for my car is a stock replacement. I'm goint to purchase it from either Napa or Autozone. I'm wondering if the SHO gurus around here could help me out and make sure I get the correct clutch. I'm wondering if one of you could hop on either of their sites, look at the stock replacement clutches on there, and let me know which is the right clutch for my car.

When I search parts on the Napa website, it lists 8 1/4" and 9 1/4" disks. I thought the recall replace them with 9 3/4" disks?? What gives? I'm pretty certain my car has had the recall done, as Ford Oasis doesn't show any outstanding recalls (even though I know this one has expired, and would not show up when I run my VIN. But, the service rep at my local dealer assured me it had been done because he didn't see anything about it on the computer when I had my car in for the seatbelt recall.)

Anyways, I hoping you guys can point me in the right direction with a correct part # to have my local stores order in for me. I can do w/out the SHO for a while as I have a '95 SLO to drive in the meantime, but I'd like to get her back as soon as possible. So, your help would be much appreciated.

The only clutch RCM offers that I would even consider is that Zoom clutch on the page. Again, I'm just looking for a stock replacement. Has ayone had any experience with the Zoom clutches?

I work for a clutch company that supplies Carquest and Autozone. We supply the OEM Valeo clutch components. I will post the part numbers tomorrow and your choices.

AutoZone: NU0122RK

Comes with Lifetime warranty...

Do not buy the NU0122 listed under 90-95 SHO's on the website, as it is not the revised kit that has the upgraded RevB TOB w/quill sleeve.

When looking it up, if you're looking up by part number, use a zero for the "0". And if looking up under car application, use an 89 SHO. :thumb:

$267.99 w/LLT warranty

And yes about the store if you just go up there with the part number.

OK, here is the history on the SHO clutches...

1989-90 originally came with an 8-1/2" diameter clutch. This was undersized and recalled by Ford, who installed a 9-1/4" clutch to replace it.

In 1991, they upsized the clutch again to 9-3/4", which required a new flywheel and had a heavy duty, cast iron pressure plate made by Valeo. This is the best clutch for street use of the SHO (and maybe a little track too).
They also found around 1992 that the center quill of the transmission (the part that the release bearing rides on) was subject to wear and binding of the release bearing. This could cause heavy clutch effort. A kit which consisted of a steel sleeve that was installed over the aluminum quill, and a larger ID release bearing, was developed.

Until you pull your clutch, it will be difficult to know which clutch you need to buy. If you want to just play it safe, you can order the latest 9-3/4" kit and a new flywheel. You may or may not need the kit with the quill sleeve.

My company only sells the original type Valeo pressure plate, which as I noted earlier is a cast iron design (very unique in the clutch world, BTW). We sell to Carquest as a part number W07-078. If you want a kit with the center quill sleeve, order a W07-078R. The flywheel is part number 727. Another source for our clutches is Clutch City, their phone number is 1-866-762-5141. If you call them, give them the above part numbers without the 'W' prefix, i.e. 07-078 or 07-078R.

Good luck, there is lots of information here if you use the search function.

Thanks for the help. I've got a clutch on the way now.

And, as for search.. I wouldn't have posted if I hadn't searched 1st. The only part # I ever found referenced was the one that TYSHO posted earlier in this thread, and I was just looking for other options. Thanks again, though!

Jarrod,
I was only suggesting the search for R & R of the clutch. I haven't done one yet but I've seen lots of good postings on the procedure.

Just wondering what clutch you went with, if you went with Autozone, does there kit have the Valeo cast iron pressure plate?

That's something you would want installed anyhow, just like the upgraded clutch kit.

Autozone kits come with a Valeo pressure plate and disc. The only place I know of that sells China made pressure plates is RockAuto with the Zoom kit.

I ended up picking up a clutch just like the one that was listed on eBay recently. It's supposed to be very comparable to the Clutchmasters Stage One with the upgraded torque straps and thicker bolts (instead of rivets to help prevent shearing). The clutch came recommended by another SHO owner who has one is his DD, which is exactly what my '89 is to me.

It came with just the disk and pressure plate. But, because of this, I was able to pick out my own TOB. I couldn't swing the ceramic right now, b/c my things have changed a little, and circumstances don't allow me to wait any more than a week to get my SHO back on the road. But, I ordered my TOB from RCM, $29.xx shipped. :thumb:

There's only one thing that sucks about my full-ride to college. I have to live in the dorms, and I have NO place to work on the car, nor the time since summer is over. I do have enough money to take the SHO to one of the few mechanics in town I trust to do the work.
