I have an 1989 SHO with 90k miles. Ijust got through replacing all the suspension components including urethane strut rod and sway bar bushings, control arms, tie rod ends, end links, struts, strut bearings and strut mounts. I also installed aluminum subframe bushings and subframe connectors. The improvement in handling was incredible. However, there is a banging noise that sounds like something is loose coming from beneath the driver firewall. The noise is almost a rattle and occurs mostly over bumps in rough roads, which is a real pain since I live on a dirt road in northern Arizona. I got under the car again and made sure everything was tight. The problems still occurs.

Does anyone know the symptoms of a bad transmission or motor mount? Does it cause banging over bad roads? The handling is very tight and does not feel loose. Can anyone please help? I am ready to take it to the Ford dealer if I can't determine the cause.

I did the same thing and ended up with the same problem. The only things I haven't changed are the strut rod bushings and the motormounts.

I went back under the car again and found the nuts on the sway bar end links (both sides) coming loose again. Once tightened, the rattle is gone. Next step is to use lock tight on the threads. It seams the rough roads the car regularly sees loosens nuts. Just today the other screw for the visor fell on my lap on the way to work.
