Hey everyone, the climate control in my '96 usually works fine, but it occasionally won't blow air out of the correct selected location.

For instance, last night during a 2-hour drive I had the climate control set to Floor/Defrost. The air was blowing out from both the defrost vents and the foot area for maybe the first hour of the drive like it should be doing. I had the temperature set at 70 degrees and the fan speed on low and I was staying nice and warm, and the windows were staying free of fog. About one hour into the trip it started getting a little chilly in the car and I could tell that my feet weren't getting the amount of heat down there that they should. I leaned toward the front defrost vents the best I could while driving, and it seemed like not much air was coming out from there neither. Both locations were still getting heat slightly, but after cranking up the blower speed it sounded like the majority of the air was escaping somewhere else. It wasn't coming out the front dash vents, but while driving I was unable to tell where the hot air was escaping to.

With the blower motor cranked up wherever the air was escaping from was making more noise than if it were coming out any of the vents that it should be. I tried cycling different vents on and off and pushed every button I could on the climate control but couldn't get the air to blow from the selected vents with more than a "breath" lightly coming from those vents. A little bit later the air started coming back out the floor and defrost vents like it should after I had given up on trying to solve the problem while driving.

The blower speed still functions properly, and doesn't go out of control. But something isn't functioning properly and I'm not sure if it's the blend door or what it is. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Andrew

Is there a hose/vent passage unhooked under the dash? I don't even know if that is possible but if the tubing comes disconnected, then I would imagine the airflow would slow down through the vents or stop completely.

Run the self test procedure.

Self Test
1. NOTE: Intermittent (run time) trouble codes will be deleted after 80 ignition cycles.
The remote climate control module is capable of displaying both self-test faults and intermittent (run time) faults on the integrated control panel. To obtain these codes, perform the following EATC on-board diagnostics test:
• On-board diagnostics should be run in ambient temperatures between 10° C (50°F) and 32°C (90° F). Record all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) displayed during diagnostic test mode.
• Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
• Push both OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously, then press AUTO within two seconds.
• The test may run as long as 30 seconds while the display will show a dashed line in the center of the display window.
• After about 20 seconds, a DTC will appear in the display. Refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Index to identify the proper diagnostic procedures.

115 U1073 Engine Coolant Temperature Signal Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
125 U1341 Vehicle Speed Signal Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.

• To exit the diagnostic test mode, press the blue button. When the EATC system assembly is turned back on, the A/C air temperature control door will self-calibrate for 20 seconds.
2. If self-test is passed and no DTCs are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
3. If DTCs are retrieved, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Index to continue diagnostics.
