clicking

First, I have a 1993 SHO MTX. When I turn the wheel either direction I get a clicking noise and it only clicks when turning the wheel, never when going striaght. Also, after driving the car for a while the clicking goes away. When I first got the car I thought maybe the left CV needed replaced, did that but the clicking has been there since then so I guess that wasn't the problem. I went and got my oil and transmission fluid changed and they said the PS fluid was in poor shape. So, does this sound like it could be anything that could be fixed by changing the PS fluid or is it more likely a suspension issue.

Start by flushing the PS fluid and refilling it.

Does it click when you turn either direction?

Yes, it clicks in both directions. Should I just suck some out and put new and and repeat until it is all clean? I live in an apartment complex and since I don't have a place to work on my car I am limited to what I can do. It's really just an annoyance that I want to get rid of.

I pulled a hose, started the car, and turned the wheel. Flushed about a quart through it, then hooked the hose back up and refilled. Make sure you have someone turn the wheel while you're refilling it to get all the air out of the system.

So if I pulled a hose (does it matter which?) and started the car and turned the wheel, PS fluid would come out of the hose right? So I let some out of the system and then I can also add new to the system after some of the old is out and flush some more after adding new, until what is getting flushed is clean looking then turn off the car and hook the hose up and fill with new fluid? And is this likely fix my problem?

It's been years since I've done it, but you want it to be as low as possible. I think I pulled it as it returned to the pump, then taped it into a milk jug.

No promises that it'll solve your problem, but it'll help keep the pump alive longer. My old '93 had a pump that groaned when it was time to flush the fluid. See if this works.

Are you sure there's nothing rubbing underneath?

Pretty sure it's nothing rubbing. The noise goes away after the car has been driven for a while. I need to do the PS fluid anyway, so I am gonna go pick some up. Hope it solves the problem. *Crosses Fingers*

Okay, I picked up two quarts of PS Fluid yesterday. Is this gonna be enough to clean the system out and then fill it up? Also if this doesn't fix it, what else can I look into doing to try and cure the noise?

I would check the outer CV joints anyways, you never know. It's pretty easy to check. Just shake both sides of the outer joints up and down, or in opposite directions. They should be able to rotate and spin freely, but they shouldn't shake or rattle and clank. Just to make sure. I hope the power steering fluid fixes it!

I'd think that if it was the strut mount it'd do it all the time, not go away when the car warms up.

Which line on the PS pump is the return line (the one I should take off to pump out fluid.)?
