I have been fighting a problem in my SHO for quite sometime now and have a few questions about the CID sensor since I have not yet replaced it. The DIS modules is used but off a low milage motor that ran fine, the cam and crank position sensors were installed about 3 years ago and shimmed properly as far as I know. The only thing I have not tried yet is the CID sensor.

The car will develop a random miss when driving. There is no specific time or reasoning but all of a sudden it gets a bad miss and the CE light comes on. The harder you press the gas the more it pops and sputters. If I keep driving usually it will start running fine again in a few minutes. A couple times I have pulled over and turned off the car. When I start it back up I get a CE light and no tach signal and the car runs fine and then after a few minutes the light goes off. The car is also hard to start at random times. I hooked up a scanner but I don;t have the codes with me. I believe one was 852 and something about pip. Anyone have any advice? am I one the right track looking to replace the CID? Is this a reasonably priced part and is it easier to install than the CPS?

Re-read your codes. Need a valid one to start troubleshooting.

Record and post them in the exact order issued by the computer. The sequence is important as the fault codes are prioritized.

Would a CPS failure happen randomly though? When I replaced it 3 years ago it went out and the car ran like crap period, not just randomly.

Wow, thats nice to know!! :thumb:  :salute: I wondered about that once seeing a code out of order before.. (bigger # first)

I'm an electrician, and when my SHO, or my 225,000 mile 300ci F-150 has a hiccup, on the spot I say, "wait, lemme dig a peice of wire out, and in a few seconds, I know what it is, being that EEC-4 is just about all I ever dealt with in 10 years or so. The old-school carborator mechanic guys hate it, and you can tell their jealous, when they are in the middle of his b/s explanation of what he thinks it is, you can say something neato, like "crank sensor" and be sure of it. nothing better to have a checklist of things you know are "for sure", makes diagnosing things easier.

This one makes me wonder... who is this anyway? His voice almost sounds familiar.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU0tt6SZgX8

Internal short in the starter? Sounds like I've said that before.. lol

I really do not want to do another crankshaft position sensor ugh Anything that might have caused premature failure that I can address while I am in there? You may see this car in the classifieds soon. I am getting really tired of hunting down sensor problems.

This might sound a bit off the wall, but I had almost the same symptoms and codes a while back. Turned out to be a partially stopped up fuel filter. Had to replace it twice to get it the problem to go away for good. Guess there was some trash in the tank. But even two fuel filters at $10 or so each and 10 minutes to put them on is worth a shot before you start replacing sensors.

I guess the codes were caused by there not being any fuel to fire in some of the cylinders.

The crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CKP a.k.a. profile ignition pickup or PIP, code 211) will not cause stumbling or missing. It will cause engine silence, as in no spark at all. Dead engine. The cylinder identification (CID) sensor (code 214) can cause a stumbling or missing during driving. You can replace that after removing only the power steering pump reservoir for clearance.

This sounds more like a CID fault with the engine's behavior, but that 211 code says that the CPS circuit had a fault too. That makes me look for a fault in a common system component such as the DIS module. Check the connectors and ground circuit for that module. The ground path is through the braided wire to the upper passenger side intake manifold bracket bolt, through the 12mm bolt securing the balance tube to the rear plenum and then through the bolts securing the DIS module to the balance tube. If there is any powder coating on the intake make sure the mating surfaces on that bracket are clean.

Thanks the replies. When my CPS went out before the car would just die whill driving. No warning, just shut off. This is intermittant for sure. Its hard to start lately too. I guess I will start with the CID since its easier and go from there. The DIS was put on recently and the car is stock so no powdercoating, etc
