Hello,

My 94 mtx started chugging between 2000 and 3500 rpm and has gotten progressivly worse, I just had my valve gaskets replaced and the mechanic said my plug wires had slight tears in the rubber boots so he just siliconed them they had been drenched in oil for some time before I had the gaskets replaced. also while it idels it will surge up to 1500 and ocassionally drop to 550 and once it died completly. I really like the car just need suggestions as to what might be causing this. Possibly need new wires and plugs a sensor?

Thanks,
Kyle

X2 On new wires if there is a noticable misfire. Don't buy cheap ones, get the good motorcraft ones and they'll be better in the long run. I used some aftermarket ones and they went bad after about 20K miles..... otherwise try cleaning the IAC

Ok i Will be ordering some new plug wires and looked on rockauto as that is where i get the majority of my parts. I realize that motorcraft is probably the best choice for wires but unfortunatly they are 170 dollars where most of the other ones are 90 dont mean to sound cheap but the car is my daily driver with a rough past so im not really into it constantly. Also what is the IAC

Thanks,
Kyle

The cylindrical thing on the left side of the picture just before the intake runners.

How do you go about cleaning the IAC and is it difficult? Any special cleaners-tools needed and curiously what does it do?

much thanks
This has been real helpful

I just used MAF Cleaner on it and I think it's a 5mm Allen Wrench to get it off. Oh yeah bring beer before doing this task. What does what do, cleaning it? Or the actual IAC?

Well cleaning it will get all the excess carbon build up out so the plunger works properly, the IAC controls the Idle Air Control.

"Oh yeah bring beer before doing this task." so I take it it can be length process to clean or just a pain. And you mentioned maf cleaner is that some special cleaner as I dont have some if it is and where do you get it. And yeah I was just curious as to what it does as you can probably tell I dont know much about these engines and how they tick but im learning. And by cleaning what will it help with the chugging or sometimes how the rpm will go a little irratic up and down.

Well It did take me a while because of how the IAC is mounted on the Intake. The bottom bolt is a pain I think It took me about two beers to get the thing off. I used MAF cleaner because other cleaners can damage the IAC like the plunger inside thats just what I have heard on the Forum. It should help the Idle to be more consistent and not up and down as when they get dirty and gunked up. Explain to me more about the chugging your car is doing.

well i posted about it about 2 weeks ago. It would idle at about 1000-950 rpm and then go up to 1300-1400 and then drop back down to 500-400 rpm the oil ligt would come on and it almost died most of the time and then come back back just before it completly died most of the time but once or twice it would die completly. Mind you this happened after i started it to let it warm up not while driving it. I was told that the cam postiton sensor was probably bad and needed a replace. So i ordered it and have it now will have it installed within the next week by my mechanic as it is a pain to get down there to get it off and I dont want to screw it up. I also had the car die on me while on my way home from work I was going 80-85 and pushed the clutch in and put the car in neutral and that is when the rmp did its thing and it died luckily i got it started again and got home. I wiped the old sensor off as it was coveredin dirt and grime and it dosent do it as frequently now but at stops i have to give it more rps like 2500-2800 or it feels like it is going to die on me.

Alright here is what I want you to do, follow the left Red hose in the picture down to where is meets up with a small round can thing (Fuel Purge Soleniod)
main.php

main.php

Find something you can stick in between the hoses to bypass that Solenoid (I used a Bic Pen cut at 1.5" long) and that might cure your problem I had the same issue.

thanks for all the help. instead of splicing in the bic pen trick, I found that my hose was badly weather cracked so I just bought some new vacuum hose and ran it directly down to the T splitter and then up to the engine. I seems to help as I have not had it go below normal idle since and it dosen't want to die on takeoff any more. now I just need to fix the chugging problem which is the plug wires and cleaning the manifold but i can live with that for another couple days until the parts come.

once again thanks

Sweet I was hoping that it would help as that cured my erratic idle problem as well, now just clean that Intake and get some new Plug Wires and while you are in there why not just change out the plugs too? Good luck man! And yes cleaning out your MAF would not be a bad idea either...

What does this solenoid do exactly?

it allows your charcoal canister to vent excess gas fumes from your fuel tank into your intake manifold. emissions stuff. if it's not working, your car'll run like shit. though seems to me you're describing craptastic plug wires.

The red hose going into your throttle body is a vacuum line.

The purge solenoid is basically an electronic valve that opens or closes... imagine it as a giant tube that runs to your gas tank. (there is also a charcoal canister in between to "absorb" vapor.)

Every once in a while that valve is told to open by the ecm, when the valve opens it sucks up fuel vapor from the gas tank through that vacuum line, and gets mixed with outside air and burned... its an emissions thing used to reduce fuel vapors (hydrocarbons) leaked into the atmosphere.
