I'm getting ready to rebuild an mtx to put in my car and I was wondering if there's any way to check the condition of the synchros? I don't know anything about the condition or mileage of it, and I don't want to install it and find out the third gear synchro is bad like the last one I put it.

Also while I have it apart, besides welding the differential pins, is there anything else I should do?

The wear item is the blocking ring. There are two areas to check - first, the teeth need sharp points, not rounded. Second, the tapered area that fits over the gear (to spin it up to speed) needs to be a straight taper, no ridges or shoulders worn into it. In my experience, the teeth typically get rounded before the taper gets worn, but look at both areas.

Do you have the SHO NUT video? It has some great tips and tricks. I like to take the syncro's apart, clean and de burr them if needed. You may be suprised at the ammount of fine metal shavings that can accumulate in the syncro keys.

Oops that's what I meant by synchro. Can I file down the rounded off teeth back to a sharp point?

I just bought it last night so I should have it in a few days.

I'm definitely going to clean out the synchro's after seeing the last trans I took apart, the collector magnet was a ball of shavings.

well, you could file the rounded teeth, but that would change the angle of the approach, which will make it harder to pull it into gear. Also, it will be hard to file them all the same so it engages evenly. I think its one of those "yes its possible, but not practical" situations.

^^^ I've deburred mine, and tried to make the teeth better, and it doesn't shift great. The solution for me is a new 1-2 syncho, or at least a better one.
