We test everything with a Midtronics brand tester for work but it's a little spendy unless you do it for a living. Autozone, Oriley, etc all test for free. This is just an opinion, but I can't help but think underhood temps is a big part of the problem. Ford has a decent battery monitoring system and overcharging a good battery probably isn't much of a concern. Since I deal with a lot of different stuff, one company we lease to does security (Toyota's). I've seen factory batteries in these swell and actually explode and I've never had that in the same vehicle in our regular fleet. The big difference is that they sit and idle for long periods of time (high underhood temps). With our turbo cars I can see that adding to the problem. I happened to have a Nissan in my bay yesterday that also had an electrolyte leak, so I snapped a quick pic to show what I was talking about regarding current draw through the electrolyte. (That's 6.83v post to case) Since the leaks are around the bottom of the post, that's what leads to damage at the bottom of the post clamp first.

The positive battery terminal should be added to the used car buyer's list of things to check. My '13 SHO had the same corrosion when I bought it. Fortunately, I was able to clean it up enough with baking soda to get a good connection. Replaced the battery with an AGM version (Sears Diehard), and sprayed with a terminal protector, and corrosion never returned.
