I just replaced my charcoal cannister. Before that I replaced the fuel system purge valve about 5 months beforehand. I'm wondering, could the saturated cannister (which had been that way for a long time) cause any problem with the new valve (which was hooked up for 5 months). Just wondering if I should replace the valve too since I just replaced the canister, that way I wont have to deal with a gas smell ever again. And are there other things that can cause this out of curiousity?

It probably didn't harm the valve. There is no reason why you should replace the valve if it is working.

The answer is no, it shouldn't hurt the valve as Scott said. There ARE other things that can cause a fuel smell in my experience.

Reading the SHOtimes.com pages on the fuel smell I checked my charcoal canister and if it was saturated I sure couldn't tell. There was NO fuel smell around the canister. To be safe, I replaced the rubber lines around the canister (no, I didn't remove the restrictor) and made sure the valve was working.

No dice - I still have a raw fuel smell, and it comes from the back of the car. My guess is it's the fuel vapor purge valve leaking (it's located on top of the gas tank.)

I'll post after replacing it (when it gets warmer!) and let everyone know.

Did you check the restrictor to see if it was plugged? You should be able to draw air/fumes from the line going from the purge solenoid back to the tank. I attached a hand vacuum pump and tried it, that line should not hold any vacuum at all.
