Changing Rear Brake Hose

The '95 has been a PITA lately, with a rear brake problem, so I have greased the slider pins (which helped) but I also discovered that the rubber hose is bad. I picked up a replacement, but I would like some clarification on how to disconnect it from the brake line. Mine is obviously all rusty, and has been sprayed a few times with PB, so now it should be ready. How does that piece come apart properly?

Well it unscrews. Should be a steel male flare fitting into a brass hose end. Apply some heat with a propane torch to the brass hose end, doesn't take a whole lot. It will come apart easily.

I didn't have to heat mine at all. I just PB'd it and loosened the flare fitting at the rubber hose.

Spray the **** out of the clip thath holds the hose to the body too! It can be a PITA also. And, whatever you do... don't twist that metal line off!

Okay, I've let it sit a bit longer than I thought and hit it again with the PB Blaster, so hopefully it should be ready to be removed now. I guess I am still a bit unclear on how to actually loosen the fitting... do I have to pull the clip out to do that, or is there something that needs to be unscrewed? I don't want to try and rotate the wrong thing, for sure! Also, the steel lines were replaced a few years back, and they still look pretty good.

For that matter, where can I get a decent torch (and how much should it run me?). I had a propane torch, but it somehow disappeared and I suspect someone stupid threw it out while cleaning the house.

I just bought a cylinder of MAPP gas at WalMart last week for $8. A torch would be another $8 I assume. They sell a self igniting torch with a propane cylinder for around $20. But you would still need some MAPP gas. MAPP is a mix acetylene and propane. This burns hotter than propane alone.

The steel line fitting will swivel on the steel line as it is a flare nut. I highly recommend heating the fitting up so you do not round off the steel fitting.

Thanks for all of the help! I managed to get the line changed a few days ago, and I was just very careful with it. The brake releases properly and feels MUCH better with the new hose. Hopefully the other one will hang in there, but if not I know how to change it now. :salute:

To prevent the rounding off of the flare nut, use the proper tool, a flare nut open end wrench and the proper open end wrench on the rubber hose fitting. 11mm sounds about right?
