Ceramic insulator?

What is the u-shaped ceramic insulator bolted to the top of my firewall? The reason I ask, is that it has recently been getting red hot. I disconnected it to be safe, and everything runs fine. It's on a 1989.

It's dropping resistor. On the 89 model year SHO's the fuel pump has a hi/lo circuit and it's for the lo circuit.

Should it be putting off that much heat though? I have it unplugged, and the fuel pump still operates normally.
