I keep hearing talk of the Check Engine Light, but how do I know if mine is even working? I assume it is supposed to light up if the key is turned but the engine is not running?? The only lights I get are battery and oil. Maybe all my bucking around has caused the lamp to burn out??

Yes, the CHECK ENGINE light should be illuminated when you turn the key ON and the is engine not running. The bulb could be burned out.
