Follow the links at the bottom of my signature to learn the simple procedures to perform the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) and Key On Engine Running (KOER) tests with only a short jumper wire and the ignition key. The Midwest SHO link shows the terminals on the test plug where you connect the jumper.

Here is a picture of one of my test jumpers and the tag with a diagram of the pins on the plugs that are used.

The CHECK ENGINE light is one of the most valuable engine diagnostic tools you can have. Learn to use it to help take care of your engine.

Please look at the "CODE FORMATS" section of the Dali Design link to show you what to look for. The only flash of the CHECK ENGINE light you can ignore is the very first flicker that is the fast dump of the codes for a code reader. After that, all flashes have meaning.

What year is your car? The 1991 and earlier EEC-IV engine controllers use the 2-digit codes and the later year versions display the 3-digit codes. The codes are flashed with 2 seconds between the digits of the same code and 4 seconds between the individual codes. The codes are displayed in two sections, each being repeated with the two sections divided by a single separator pulse.

For the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) test, the first section of displayed codes is the Hard Faults. These are the problems identified during the execution of the KOEO test. These codes will be repeated. There will then be a single separator pulse and the 6 second pauses on before and after it. The second code section is for the Memory codes that were stored whenever the CHECK ENGINE light illuminated while the engine was in operation. These codes will be displayed and repeated.

Below is an example of what you would see for a 121 code in the Hard Faults and 211 and 214 codes in Memory. It is very helpful to write down the codes as they are being displayed as it may be difficult to recall them later.

Flash sequence:
Key: F = flash, .. = 2 second pause, .... = 4 sec pause, ...... = 6 sec pause

1. Fast Codes
Ignore the fast code flicker

2. HardFaults
F....F..F....F.... (1-2-1)
F....F..F....F (1-2-1 repeated)

3. Separator Pulse
......F...... (separator pulse)

4. Memory Codes
F..F....F....F.... (2-1-1)
F..F....F....F..F..F..F.... (2-1-4)
F..F....F....F.... (2-1-1 repeated)
F..F....F....F..F..F..F (2-1-4 repeated)

5. End of Test

Code Descritpions:
121 (O [KOEO test],R,M) Throttle Position (TP) sensor out of range
211 (M [memory]) Ignition PIP [CPS] signal was erratic or missing
214 (M [memory]) Error in Cylinder ID (CID) circuit or signal

You can then clear the memory codes by turning the ignition key OFF, then ON again to rerun the KOEO test. Once the CHECK ENGINE light begins to display the codes, remove the jumper from the EEC TEST block. This will clear the codes stored in memory to allow you a fresh look at any new problems that may arise.
