ccrm working cooling fan..???

Cooling fan not working... not sure what is goin on. Pulled fan out and tested it with car battery hooked up to plug...and it kicked on. (Seemed to struggle tho..) but did spin.

Then started car turned on max ac and put volt meter on (cooling fan) connector that comes from ccrm wire cluster. Volt meter read 13.4 volts...

So why isnt fan working..??? Am I missing something..?? Wanna keep my sho on the road.. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

When you hooked the fan directly to the battery, it should have seemed like a wind tunnel - what do you mean by "seemed to struggle"?

This is what made me get rid of my last SHO. What year is your car?

Three reasons above plus wiring short are reasons for this type of failure. You need to test all of those to track down the culprit. There are model year specific replacement fans and getting the correct one can be a chore. Do you have access to a known working CCRM to rule that out? I've had at least one fan motor failure in the last 18 months. They are quite old in a harsh environment to last this long.

Your fan motor is pooched.

You can tinker around and try to get another motor, fight with the fan wheel to get it off, and mount the new fan motor in your shroud assembly while fighting with the 3 captured nuts holding it in.

Or you can buy another complete fan assembly (yours is a single speed fan I believe) from an ad on this forum. Get it from a same year car and make sure the connector is the same.

By struggle I mean sounded ruff while spinning when hooked to battery .. sho is a 1992.. i also have access to a duel fan assembly from a 94sho automatic transmission from parts car...if that would work....???

My buddy does have 91sho with working fan/ccrm but is afraid to mess with his ccrm for fear of his fan not working after we disconnect and then hook back up... (he nows how touchy these car can be.. haha)

That's true enough. I usually try and have spare ccrm and pcm's in the garage just in case.
You need the correct fan for the year and dual atx fan won't plug and play work. Search the forum for which years are compatible with your car. I would also save the original fan, on the off chance that you can successfully disassemble it without breaking it, for future use to swap in working aftermarket replacement units.

unfortunately, the connector on the dual fan unit will be different from what you have. if you are able / motivated to change the connector, you can make the dual fan unit work but I don't remember how well or poorly it will fit - I think it will interfere with the coolant overflow bottle on the mtx.

So tested the fan by hooking up a car battery by putting paper clips into fans femal connector and it did run.... but could fan motor it be almost fried..therfore not wanting to run ?? Or could the connector itself be goin bad and not getting good connection. .???

Also hooked volt meter to the fans male connector from ccrm.... was 0.0 until I turned on maxAC, then volt meter read 13.4... does that mean ccrm is good..?? Or should it only be reading 12 volts...?

Would at least like to know if that means ccrm is good....

13.4-ish is correct, could be anywhere from 13.2 to 14.2V

Ok so tested fan again by hooking up to 12v car battery... this time it did NOT run. For confirmation I hooked up battery to fan from 94 AT and it ran great...

So guess I'm now looking for replacement fan/motor for 92 SHO.. any tips on finding one would be welcome. ...

Shop around for a used one. You can try and replace the motor but getting the old unit out without busting up the old piece is difficult.

So rad cooling fans are hard to find locally.... my sho is 92 mtx.... do I need a SHO fan from exact year...?? Or are there other years that would work as well...? (Such as years 89 to 93 mtx fans..??)

Also what about cooling fan from lincoln or mercury cars from that era...? This surely isn't a SHO specific part is it..????

This is a SHO specific part and nothing else is adaptable. You can buy a new motor on RockAuto for well over $100.00 while the other motors for other applications are about $25.00. These fans are really that good.
Why are you resisting putting an ad on this forum for a complete set-up from a 92?

Found sum used parts from 89 and 93 SHO at local junk yards... Was hoping those fans would b compatible to my 92 mtx.....

Ok so found fan motor on rockauto... and replaced it with old motor.... it works.

But motor only works when I turn on max AC.... it does not work when temp gets high...

Sooo is it safe to assume that CCRM is going bad on me as well..???

It's possible but I don't know if I would assume that. It could also be that the motor was mislabeled as SHO or for the incorrect SHO year. These are parts that you have to research thoroughly before you pull the trigger because they are so model and model year specific.

iirc, the 92 had a single speed fan, so if it runs then the new motor is fine.

how do you know "it does not work when temp gets high"? the fan does not kick on until after the thermostat opens, so its pretty warm at that point, unless the a/c is on - then it should always run.

Tested fan by driving around for 30 mins... then pulled over and opened hood to physically watch fan...

The temp needle went all the way up to the "N" on the gauge... I'm sure thermostat wud have opened by then...

I then turned on max ac and fan kicked on... and preceded to cool engine temp back down to "M" (normal operating temp).

Closed hood and drove around another 20 mins ...temp climbed to "N" again before I decided to turn max ac on again... and it then cooled back down....

I am wondering if ccrm is possibly goin bad ....?? Because I have already replaced thermostat, ect, and fan motor.

Well, the good news is owning a SHO means you can always use an extra CCRM so go for it. However that may or may not fix this.

The SHO has 2 temperature sensors, one runs the gauge, the other feeds information into the engine control module (ECM). Have a look at the second sensor and the wiring.

And congratulations on getting the fan wheel off the motor shaft, and the new motor installed in the plastic housing. You are one of the few who made that happen.
