Hello All... I just bought a 94 SHO (my second SHO), I bought it with some problems in hopes of fixing them... Well here are the problem(s)... The engine runs rough almost seems as if it is skipping; second it does not have much power, you can floor it and it sill wont move; third I get a smell of gas inside the car when I floor it and lastly I have oil in the sparkplug groves (which I already read about in this forum) ..

This is what I have done so far: I’ve checked the timing belt.. is nice and tight and looks good. I've pressure tested all the cylinders, 4 were 240psi, one 255 psi and the last one was 235psi. Any thoughts on those numbers, as I don’t know what is good and what isn’t? Also, as the car was running we noticed that the CATS were bright RED!! Now I know I could get all these problems with a clogged Cat… only thing I don’t know is how to test and see if the cats are in fact clogged. Any suggestions as to how to check the cats or what might be causing the cats to turn bright red??? Any input would greatly be appreciated!!! Thanks…

Sam

ohio is for hustlers
Take off the y-pipe and look at it to see if the cats are indeed clogged. It definitely appears that they are. I wouldn't run the car much more before you take a look at those cats.

my mechanic told me that when cats get red hot that is a sign of them startign to go or are gone already. he was fixing my car and noticed i had brand new cats and a y pipe so he asked me if they were hi flow cats. he asked me if the old ones got red hot and if that was the reason for getting new ones, but i told him it was the actual y pipe and not the cats that was not working. well good luck!

Either the cats are clogged,or the car is running dangerously lean.Id say the cats though since it`s at a power loss.

I few different things can cause the cats to get red hot. Most of which I have experienced.

1. Could Be that your plugs are fouled and not sparking.... passing raw fuel into the cats and the fuel is igniting there.

2. Cats are clogged... nuff said.

3. Timing is way off..... nuff said. Pull the covers, pull the dis connector. Try to bump the ignition and see if the timing lining up. This is hard to do. I would take it to a mechanic and have them check the timing.

Either way, if your cats are red, it isn't the first time. I would get a new Y-Pipe, if they haven't collapsed already, they will very soon. I would double check the timing to make sure it is set correctly.

the EXACT same thing happend to me the day I picked my ATX up....There was a ton of oil in the plug wells, grounding out the spark, so no spark=unburned gas that ignites in the cats...get the oil out of the plug wells and talk to shonut about a upper gasket set.....Another possibility, I think, maybe the t-stat is stuck, so the car never really "warms up" so it runs rich and that is where the extra gas is igniting...

Good luck..
I WOULDN'T recommend driving it until you at LEAST get the oil out of the plug wells...
