well i made the trip around town to get quotes on what it would cost to replacce the cats on my y pipe. well 1 shop told me to buy another y pipe. another said no way. another said that they will run it catless even though its illegal for 60 to 80 bucks. if i wanted cats then im better off buying a new y pipe. one of my friends who is a mechanic/body/paint man said he can gut the cats with a sizz wheel and weld it back up for 40$.. my question is would gutting the cats make it a little less raspy then a straight pipe? what would you guys do?

I did'nt see much of a sound differance when i gutted my cats. What i did on one of my other cars when it needed cats I just replaced the old cats with strait pipe and installed a single high flow cat where the y comes together.

Do you know if there is anything wrong with your cats? I would leave them alone unless you have an issue.
I do know they are worth quite a bit at the salvage yard because they have some exotic metal in them.

well i just got done with my y pipe. i cut both of the cats open and realized one cat had allready been blown out it was empty. the other one i broke up all the honeycomb materiel and welded it back up. so my y pipe is allready to bolt up. catless magnaflow.

yep because if your off just a little on replacing that cat the pipe will not bolt flush and create leaks.

Two reasons:
- In a emissions state, a Y-pipe with no cats is going to look real bad during a traffic stop when the officer goes to look.
- Gutted cats will help keep rasp under control, where test pipes will be rasp city.

i live in ny aswell, the state where they pull you over for everything. i've never had a cop look under my car, even with excessive exhaust noise tickets. however leaving the shells in place is a good idea for visual inspections at inspection stations

plus the empty cavity will act like a very small resonator like he said keeping rasp down.

I was thinking of doing something similar; losing the cats, replacing the resonator witha long glasspack or bullet muffler and using chambered turbos or Edelbrock SDT muffs. I've heard the SDTs on other v6s and they don't seem to rasp too bad. Maybe use 2 1/2 pipe from the y-pipe back?
