Please advise. I have an 89 sho 170,000
lately when the car is cold, if i do not let it warm up for 5 minutes, if i hit the gas the rpms dip before they go up. unfortuneatly the other night while warming the car up the rpms fluttered jumped to 2500and then it stalled and would not restart. the starter was cranking but it woulod not turn over. I called aaa and 2 hours later i went to my car to meet the tow truck and it started right up and i drove home no problem. the car was fine for a week, then this weekend while i was driving, the car shut off, and would not start. after 2 hours, it started right up, however after running for 10 minutes, the check engine light came on, the idle was a little rough and if i did not stay on the gas ,, it was starting to stall.
i parked the car and have restarted it a few times, it starts right up, no check engine light.
Question 1 does anyone have any dea what the problem may be?
question 2 does anyone have an opinion as to if i would be doing more damage by driving ity 10 miles to my mechanic? or have it towed?

I doubt driving it will cause any problems. Try pulling the codes from the computer. www.shotimes.com has a write-up on how to do this with a paper clip. We need a little more info to help you. Like maintence and the codes.

The car had had 60k service done at 60 and 120, next one is due in 10k.
The car recently got new plugs, and a new clutch. That is all the recent maintenence it has had. i will look into getting the codes. Any help would be great.

The codes will help to tell the tale, but you likely have more than one problem. The idle speed problem may be affected by the throttle position sensor (TPS), the idle air control, or bypass, valve (IAC or IAB), the mass air flow (MAF) sensor (dirty filiments) or the need to reset the idle speed control programming.

The engine cutting out and failing to start is likely the crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CKP) near its end of life. This $57-$58 sensor (from AutoZone) is mounted under the lower timing belt cover and is characteristically replaced during a timing belt change. It looks like your next "front end" 60K should be moved up a few thousand miles.

While in to replace the CPS and timing belt, you may also consider replacing the water pump (remanufactured), accessory belts, front main crankshaft oil seal and even the camshaft seals if there is evidence of oil leakage from those sources.

See this topic for a list of parts and sources to be considered during the main maintenance services.

See the link in my signature for good infor on the code tests.

bad o2 sensors caused my car to stall randomly.

But tis sounds like your IAB is going. Take it off and clean it; or just get a new one.

Also does anyone know of a sho specialist in the nyc area for a 60k , besides the one in brooklyn. I have used him before, and he is good, just hard for me to get to him. Thanks again
I love my sho and need it running smooth again.
