I still haven't managed to get the fluid changed. I'm going to take a look at the fluid when we change the bushing. I have all the fluid, I just haven't been able to do it as of yet. I think I'm going to have to buy some drive-ons.

In a pinch, sometimes you can get enough room to work underneath by driving the left side wheels up on a curb, or straddling a suitable culvert or ditch. Good luck with it.

Your '92 should have a rod shifter. You really should get a set of drive on ramps in order to get under the car to check the shifter. At least borrow some...

Like itwonder said, driving up on something to get enough clearance to get to the drain plug would be a good idea, just to know if it's full of fluid.

Since it's parked for the moment, until I can look at it, I'll have a little time to plan all that out. I'm definitely going to buckle down and get stuff done on it. And maybe it is a rod shift, but I thought I had read cable. I'll look into that too.

We were planning on it, but I did mention that it was a little out of my price range for the moment. It's on the to do list.

My recommendation would be to do all the extermnal things ASAP. By that I mean changing the fluids, checking all the linkage bolt and replacing the bushings. This may fix it, and would eliminate ALOT of variables. If it doesnt then its clutch time. Problem is, if you keep driving it as is, you could turn a "Semi easy Fix" into a "Needs a new/different Transmission" fix.

I agree. That's why it's parked. It's my only car at the moment, so it's rough, but I'm managing.

P.S. ShoSource shipped the bushing today, so we'll be working on it soon as it gets here.

My trans stabilizer rod rusted into 2 pieces and I had somewhat similar symptoms, check it over good. (One piece of black pipe, a torch, and a good welding buddy fixed it) :D

So, no one has any input on the heat being a factor in this?

Everyone keeps telling me I'm crazy, but I swear I've only had problems with it when it's hot. Maybe I am crazy.

You aren't crazy. Maybe there is something to this, but the info provided at this point doesn't point to an obvious temperature effect.

I don't know what it is either. But I'm glad to hear that someone doesn't think I'm totally nuts. Bushing should arrive Thursday. We'll do the fluid change and check out the stabilizer bar while we're down there. Hopefully that should make it shift correctly. God, I hope so.

Got the bushing, but it's been raining all week. Guess she'll be parked a little longer...

Right now in Bakersfield, but I live outside Sacramento. Car is with me. I'd definitely feed anyone who feels like helping.

Installed the new bushing! Other one was trash.

Good news: Clunk sound is gone!

Bad news: Still have grinding.

Guess tranny oil is next.
