Sounds like when my fuel pump started dying out. It would start but idle below 500rpm. Couldn't drive forward. If I left it for awhile it would start right up and drive perfectly.

I had these symptons: noisy fuel pump, less power when closer to empty, slight hesitation when taking up 1st gear. Also I would get a tach signal when cranking and no CEL.

I also installed the Walbro. No it won't add horsepower to a stock setup but it can be usefull if you decide to do mods. The Walbro is very quiet and I can barely hear it prime. My car is smoother under load with the a/c on and always starts on the first try.

Could be the CPS or the fuel pump or even something else. It would be wise to accurately diagnose the problem before throwing money at the car. The putt, putt, putt does sound like a dying fuel pump, but check those codes. Does the tachometer register when the car is cranking and not starting? Can you hear the control module fuel pump relay "click" when the ignition key is turned to ON? Eighty five percent of fixing something is finding out what is wrong.
