Just got my car back from being in two shops. What the first shop did was get it inspected. It needed alot of parts to pass inspection. What the second shop did was put in a new clutch and flywheel, and gave it a major tune up. They did a great job. in totall so far I have spent $2100 on this car. Anyway, I took my car to work yesterday. Drove it there and back with not a single problem. Then I told my brother that he could drive it to school. Going to school no problem, but when he came home, he told me that he only had 4th and 5th gear. So I went out to my car started it up and tried to put it into 1st, I couldnt. It was like something was there stopping me from doing so. Then I tried to put it into any gear, no luck. I could put it into reverse tho. Dont kno if this matter or not but, I can put it into gear without the car being on. I hope its not the tranny, because I really dont have the money to put in a new tranny. The only reason that I think it is not the tranny because I specifically asked my mechanic after it was done being inspected about how good my tranny was. He told me it was good. If I put it into 1st gear without the car being on, then I start it will that hurt anything? Im gonna go out tomarow to see if I can find anything. Also when my brother parked the car and came in and told me that he only had 4th and 5th gear I went out to the car, I smelled something like burning rubber coming from the engine. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (Sorry for making it so long)

that rubber thing coming from the engine... the clutch... and yes a new clutch can burn up quite quickly, especially if you didnt give it the 500 mile treatment (no beating on it) it could also be that he made smooth spots on your clutch by not taking care of it (thus it wont grab) however this ususally would render the higher gears useless before the lower ones... try driving it tomorrow

and remember not everyone can drive stick, even if they can get the car rolling

I used to trust my brother with my car until he got a ticket for laying out 1200 feet of rubber (he was cutting doughnuts with my 240Z). Sounds like the clutch is bad. Maybe a strap has been broken on the pressure plate.

What year is your car? Where do you live in PA? I may be able to help you out. If your car is pre 5/91, you may have a cable shifter problem. Also, you can check the pressure plate straps and bolts if you remove the starter and use a small mirror to "peek" inside. Did the shop loctite the pressure plate bolts?

I live in Lehighton, I took the car to two guys, one of the guys I meet on this forum. I emailed him back and he thinks it is the auto clutch adjuster, I will see what they can do.

Your brother probabaly abused the clutch. With it being so new it is very easy to ruin it.

Lesson #1: NEVER let anyone else drive your car if you are not with them! I don't care how responsible or trustworthy the person is. (unless it is your woman) It is just to tempting to beat on it. Now, since you already let your brother drive it, you have no proof whether it was a mechanics error or your brother beating the sh.t out of it. You'll have to take your brothers word for it, and in the back of your mind, you'll always know he was the reason. Trust me.. I was a porter at a ford dealership when I was about 18, and the main reason I worked there was to drive the cars.. One of the first deliveries I had to do was pick up a ford lightning that we had sent to a truck shop for a new driveshaft(because it broke). I tell you what; I made absolutely sure that the driveshaft was in perfect working condition when I layed a couple of 200 foot burnouts on the way back to the dealer. Impolite? yes. Disrespectful? yes Dishonest? yes Fun? **** YES!!!

DO NOT EVER LET ANYONE ELSE DRIVE YOUR CAR OR YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!
(unless you do not care about the car..)

Maybe you will get super lucky and the mechanic will tell you it was in fact his fault, but untill then go find yur brother and borrow his ride....lol..

I could only get my car into reverse gear after I blew a diff pin on the highway. Sooner or later I shifted the car enough to get into a forward gear.
Is it leaking tranny fluid anywhere?

When I push down on the clutch pedal it doesnt even fell like I have a clutch. You dont have to put really any force down. Any idea, thinking about just takin it to my mechanic and gettin it done and over with.

Well I just took it for a ride. I had to start the car up with it in first. I got it goin then I tried to shift it into 2nd but I couldnt. Tried 3rd nothin. Went to put it into 4th and it went in. Then I shifted it into 5th and it went in. I can only get it goin when I start it in first. But when I am in 4th and coming to a stop I cant shift it into first. So I only have 4th and 5th. I just hope its nothing serious. Like the clutch already.

Thats why he's not gonna tell you... Dude you gotta tell your brother he needs to tell you what happend no matter what. What kind of sound did it make when happend(it probably didn't go quietly) de he smell anything?(I'm betting yes, like rubber and clutch.) and did he win the race at least??!!C'mon the suspense is killing me!
