The sender is a ******... since you have an ATX, I can tell you what to do...

Buy the Oil Pressure Sender socket (Lisle makes it, sold at pep boys) and put it on a 3/8" ratchet (stubby if you have it).

There is a "tunnel" which is between the throttle body and master brake cylinder. The oil pressure sender has a right angle plug on it and sticks out of the engine at almost a right angle but tilted slightly down. Some oil will come out but not enough to be concerned with.

Attaching the gauge is easy... put the illumination wire on the dimmer circuit, run a wire to the sender, run a switched wire to the gauge and tie all the grounds together and connect to the frame somewhere.

Jeff, where did you run the tubing through the firewall? I want to install gauges someday but haven't seen a good place to run through the firewall yet.

There is a rubber grommit that I enlarged to pass all my wires through.. I think it's the accelerator cable that goes through it. Can be a REAL **** to get little stranded wires through since it enters the engine compartment under the master cylinder. I fished the wires through with a coathanger when I installed my alarm.

One more thing, buy an electric gauge for your oil pressure. I was gonna get a cheapie mechanical setup but everyone and their mother suggested that I get electrical...

JCWhitney has a selection of electrical water temp, oil presure and volts gauges that are under $20 each with the sender and proper adapters you need. The oil pressure gauge is a little scary to look at though since it REALLY wags around when you're speeding up and slowing down.. I'm sure better (autometer, vdo) gauges aren't as jumpy and are probably more accurate to boot.

If I recall correctly, the water sender is 1/8" NPT and the oil presure is 1/4" NPT (By the way, that doesn't mean the diameter of the opening, it's the pitch of the threads or something. The oil pressure hole is like 3/4" wide..)

You may want to install the new sender using a T-adapter so you can keep the original sender also. Or you may be left staring at an idiot light. Your other option is to remove your cluster and pull the bulb for that warning.

Some oil pressure gauge senders (VDO) have a second terminal for driving the idiot light. It might be preset at a slightly different PSI, but I'm not sure how accurate the idiot light switch is anyway.

I installed a mechanical oil press. gauge in my car. It took about 1 hr. with the install of the my water temp gauge. Why are they so bad? I believe them to be more accurate.

(Go double-check your hose fittings tommrow because this will probably jinx you)

The teflon hose can possibly come off and let your oil spray out. It would be bad if this happened outside of the cabin but would be really bad if burning hot oil were spraying inside. The remedy for that would be to install a braided hose in place of the standard teflon hose but those cost about $50.

The mech. gauges larger needle sweep is very nice but I think Autometer makes a 270 degree swept area electric gauge now.

Greddy electrical guages are 270 degree, very high quality. yes, mechanical guages can make a mess, even the stainless steel tubes can come loose, beware!
