Cam seal

Hey everyone. Thanks for the great responses last time. I'm in the process of replacing the cam seals, front main, timing belt, water pump etc... While I was looking though it appears that the farthest cam on the back is leaking. The one that has the cam sensor attached to it. It appears that the housing that the cam sensor is attached to is leaking. Is this a common place to leak? What sort of seal does it take? How do you get it off? Thanks for your help

Ok gotcha, so it takes a regular cam seal just like the other two. I guess why that's why the tutorial I was looking at said to purchase three cam seals. I purchased the national 1213n's. Thanks for the reply.

If you don't have the tool or something similar, take the top half of the front bearing housing off, so you can slip the seal over the cam without rolling the lip of the seal, then line it up properly and put a couple dabs of silicone gasket material on the sharp edges that meet at the seal and reinstall the top half of the bearing. That will keep you from ruining the new seal.

Put a thin coat of RTV around the perimeter of the seal or else it can leak at the seam in the housing (even the rubber coated seals). Use grease on the lips of the seal. You have to keep the seal absolutely straight as it goes on, and that is very difficult. I slowly tap them in place with a piece of PVC that matches the diameter using a 1/2 inch thick iron bar as my tight-clearance hammer. Removing the cap on the housing is also a good way to do it, with the caveat that you are removing the rear valve cover for some other reason. IMG 2109 IMG 2160

Definitely remove the power steering reservoir and all the other stuff around there to give you as much working room as possible.
