Can anyone tell me what sound to listen for when the cam gears begin to slip? I hear a "rattle like noise" from the engine compartment, but I can't tell where its coming from. It sounds like a diesel motor. Also, if the problem is cam gear related is it too late the have them welded? Thanks, Bob

If the gears have slipped a little bit, the valves could be tapping the top of the pistons. If you're worried about the cam gears, it's best to get them welded before they let go. There might not be any warning.

yup the diesel sound is the cam about to slip.. I have heard it myself in the past and it eventually gets louder and louder until the cam is spun. Stop driving it you can still save it.

Yeah, I kinda figured it was the cam gears. I live in a small Nebraska town, so I hope I can find someone who can do the welding job. If not, I don't know what to do. Thanks for the comments.

I have a loose set of welded cams. Not that that is an easy way out.

Thanks, Shoz123. I'm taking the car into my mechanic tomorrow. If we find that the valves aren't bent yet, I might talk to you about selling them to me, if he doesn't want to try welding the cams.
