I’m looking at purchasing a 2011 Taurus SHO with 150k that’s a one owner and is exceptionally clean with a lot of maintenance records. What is everyone’s experience with their personal high mileage SHO’s? I need this car to be dependable and last well into 200k miles. Would this car be a mistake?

when you say a lot of maintenance records, what all was done? We talking 3000 mile oil changes it's whole life, or has it had timing chains, water pump, and other components replaced?

If the timing chains and water pump haven't been done yet, you're on borrowed time and looking at between $1500-3000 for and R&R since most places pull the engine to do the work.

If those have been completed within the last 30k miles and a compression test checks out, then you're good to go. If you don't plan to modify it, I'd definitely invest in an aftermarket warranty, but research before you buy because they aren't all created equal.

Good luck on the purchase, they're great cars when taken care of.

It's a crapshoot at 150k as far as what dependable means to you. If you can not afford replacement parts and whatever time it takes then you should get a more reasonable car until you have some flexibility. That's the conservative advice. The flip side is more attractive but the risk is higher. You'll just have to make the cost benefit analysis based on what your resources and tolerance for maintenance and repairs is. Good luck either way!

It comes down to price and condition. I found a few with that mileage on Cargurus with no wrecks/etc for around $8K. So if it's well maintained and the price is right, then I'd go for it.

I think it also depends on how you intend to use it. If it's a highway driver, never really dogging it, high mileage shouldn't be an issue. If you plan to build it for 400-500 AWHP, then maybe consider something with less miles.

Are the turbos original? Has the water pump been replaced along with all timing gear? Original PTU?

Personally - unless the water pump and PTU have been already replaced - I wouldn’t walk - I would RUN away from any SHO with over 100,000 miles. But that’s just me.

I bought mine with high mileage but just because timing chain, water pump and turbos had been recently replaced.
Other things like wheel bearings, suspension components and wear items can fail but those should not be repairs that break the bank.
30+ months later it is still running good, tuned and given hard pulls every time I drive it..
