Sir, as a proud owner of of an 87 GN from day one I can tell you that for 6k you won't get much of a car. If you only want to spend that much I would recommend a T-type which is the same car only in diff. colors . They can be bought for much less than a GN. I live in Texas and work with a gentleman who has ten sitting outside his shop at any given time to be worked on or modified.
My GN , which is heavily moded, will easily run 10's in the quarter mile. If you think a SHO is expensive to work on just wait till you try to keep the Buick running at tip-top shape. If I were you and you have your heart set on a GN, save another 5K and get one that is solid and newly rebuilt. If you need any info on them feel free to email me. I am a BUick Nut and have been involved with building , restoring and showing them since I bought mine in 1987. I love the car but some days it makes me scream trying to keep it alive and well. Still, the most enjoyable to drive and show.

I don't mean to be a killjoy, but I know what you get for 6k today . You will spend lots of money getting it right. Better to let someone else spend the money and you buy it from them. Just my advice.

I will ask a couple of people in the local Buick club and see what I can find. I am assuming you want an 86 or 87 "T". These are the best years performance wise. Don't fall for the 84 and 85 years being the same . They do not have an intercooler and only ran in the high 15's in the 1/4. They can be made to go fast but will cost more than buying a 86 or 87.
If you need some good info on the cars go to www.turbobuick.com or www.turbobuicks.com message boards. These are great sites for GN's and they have a trader section that always has them for sale. You can get a good idea what you can get for you money . CHeck it out
I have a 93 MTX SHO that I enjoy driving . If it only were rearwheel drive I would stick a turbo on it and really have some fun. I try to appreciate most cars for what they are though and not bash them. I have a 1970 GS that I made into a GSX clone that I did a complete restoration to 10 yrs ago. I love my musclecar but wouldn't want to drive it every day. I guess variety is the spice of life.

Be patient and get what you really want.

If you can get a Buick Regal WE4 (GN is code WE2) you'll end up with a faster car. They're black like the GN's, and have a gray interior instead of the two tone seats. They are rare (1547 made only in 1987) but you'll still get people that have no clue what they have. All the power options are actually options on this car so you can end up having one light puppy if the original owner didn't go nuts on the checklist. There's some pictures on www.buickwe4.com

I know where you can find a 89 TTA in imaculate condition for about three times what you want to spend. rarity definitely adds to their value, that's for sure.

hmm..that is very interesting. IMO, Id rather have regal T-type than a GN anyday.
And would take a WE4 before both of them. That WE4 is gonna be worth some $ one day. To me, 85,86,87 GNs are a dime a dozen. When do you ever see a T-type?
